I would go with a real Synthetic. What I mean by 'real' is a Redline, Amsoil, Mobil and Royal Purple. ( I might be missing a couple ) In 92 Mobil lost a lawsuit against Castrol over the Term "synthetic". Castrol synth products are just Highly refined oil, they have never been synthetic. The judge ruled that synthetic is a marketing term. So I can take some bunker c, pee in it, and slap a label on it saying its synthetic. Thanks Castrol for screwing over the consumer for the past 15 years with your Faux-synthetic garbage.

I just changed the diff. and trans. fluid today. I was going to go with motul, but Eddie at performance nissan didnt recommend it. After calling and checking at about 5 different places, I finally found royal purple maxgear 75-90. A lot of the notchiness is gone, and the 1-2 gear clunk is gone also. The trans fluid looked pretty clean when it was draining, but the diff. fluid was horrible. It looked like mud, with lots of fine metal shavings. If you havent done this yet, you should.

well just did my today. boi that diff oil smell like ***...i had to take two showers for that funky smell to go away for just drippin' on my arm..i did not use a jack..it was my first time but it was pretty easy to do...+1 on this thread monsta

I have read the whole thread and it looks like the kind and amount of Oil that you need to do this and the most important parts are:

Manual Transmission Fluid Change

Redline MTL ( GL4 ) 70W-80 - 2 quarts [ Combined with
Redline MT90 ( GL 4 ) 75W-90 - 2 quarts <-----------this ]
*2 Replacement Crush Washers ( part # 110264n200 )

Rear Differential Fluid Change

Redline MT90 ( GL 5 ) 75W-90 - 2 quarts

*bolts are to be torqued down to 23-28 ft/lbs
* Fluid suction Gun

I'm planning to change mine next week. Pls. chime in if I miss anything important doing this process.

 

I think you got it. I just did mine recently. Buy the crush washers ahead of time, if your dealer is out of stock it may take a week to get them in. I got my suction gun at autozone for about $10. I would do the M/T first with the GL4 oil, and then the GL5. You don't want any of the sulfer from the GL5 getting into the manual transmission.

The M/T will take about 3.25 or 3.5 US quarts, but you just fill it up until it spills out the side fill hole. Similarly for the diff (I don't remember how much the diff took, but your number looks right). The diff drain plug is magnetic, so you'll want to wipe off the metal shavings on it, and if it looks like it has excessive shavings, it might be a sign that something is wrong. After you do the diff fluid, you can drive some figure-8's to get those gears moving around.

 

Did any of you use "LSD Additive" when changing the diff fluid???? Or do the products your using already have it. I don't see it listed in the service manual.

I don't have access to a lift (under construction) and the folks at the local oil change place say I need the additive as well for LSD's?

Anyone?

Dealer Service says you have to put friction modifier in when using aftermarket gear oil, and you do not have to put friction modifier in when using stock OEM gear oil! hmmmm?

 

redline diff fluid has lsd additives in it allready...

 

What about Motul?

 

Thanks for the respone. I used the Red Line and it does indeed already have additives. Just to echo what has been said, you must get the suction grease gun because this is a very messy job either way. The manual trans fluid looked good and probably didn't need changed but I used the Red Line MT-90 anyway. The diff fluid even with only 12,000 miles looked horrible, dirty and has fine metalic particles in it. This is a must do for everybody. By the way, my wife is still complaining about how bad the GL-5 rear diff fluid smells. Good luck to all. This is not that hard of a project but be prepared to get dirty.

 

I dont feel like reading all the pages on here.. But I just got back from the stealership and they told me that the Nismo diff took 90w140 plus they put the additive.... That damn oil is expensive at 20 bucks per quart!! WTF.. I also thought that sounded high because I read on here 75w90.. But oh well if they blow my Nismo diff.. They will pay for it..

 

Just changed my tranny and diff., man what a difference in the differential. That stuff was like mud coming out and had lots of metal particles on the drain plug. Only had 5600 miles as well!

 

at 30000 or so, i did my transmission with the Redline MT-90 GL-4 and my differential with mobil 75w-90 GL-5. i posted info and impression here:

just the other day at 52000, i used Royal Purple 75w-90 GL-5 in BOTH, transmission and differential. i decided to use this in the transmission as well because 1) i didnt feel like driving around or ordering it online to get the GL-4 2) Royal Purple specifically listed it being non-corrosive. i took this as "safe to use" for GL-4.

the differential fluid was black as i expected. i had 3-4 auto-x events and 4 track days... plus the daily driven miles.

the transmission fluid was like new.... because it was new!!! i got the CD009 transmission under warranty at 45000 or so. i just decided to do it while i was under the car.

impression on Royal Purple? give me some time to drive the car and fix my annoying exhaust leak on my downpipe so i can actually hear things. lol.

btw, i reused gaskets on drain/fill plugs again. :-P
