Default CarbonFibre N00b Question

Hey guys, this is probably a stupid question but i really got no idea:

Carbonfibre hoods and such are much lighter than OEM hoods and such right?

But i personally don't really like the CF color of the hood, so is it posible to have the hood painted by a proffesional company so it will match the original color? thnx guys!

Actually the stock hood is made of Aluminum. So I don't think there is much if any weight savings from a CF hood as compared to an OEM hood. Its mostly for appearance.

A typical carbon fiber hood is about 8 lbs. lighter than our aluminum ones. So if you don't want it for the looks then there is really no way to justify buying one and painting it.

You don't want your hood to be too strong. You want it to bend in the middle and fold if you are in a front end crash.

The hood contributes very, very little to the structural rigidity of the car's unibody so strength is really a mute point. However, in a front end crash severe enough to push the hood back into the cabin, the carbon fiber would shatter anyway, this is just a material property of carbon fiber. It is very light and stiff for the weight and will show very little stress deformation until it reaches it's yield strength, at which point it will shatter. Aluminum is a soft metal and though it is light it will bend progressively until it reaches its yield strength. So really, a CF hood in this case is for meager weight savings and spankin-good looks. Oh, and cooling as previously as mentioned, but heat really isnt a concern for the Z as much as it was for older sports cars (i.e. rx-7s). I doubt a CF hood would be a safety issue either.

I could be wrong, but I think CF hoods shatter instead of crumple

the fusion hood might not fit if you have an aftermarket plenum. At least when Jason and I were looking to see if one might fit on my car, it didn't quite seem possible without somehow cutting pieces of the hood off.

Yes, it is paintable. CF hoods are covered in a gloss that can be sanded so that primer and paint will adhere.
