Hand Painted Badges? Anyone?
I was looking at getting the blacked out badges for my car but then I saw that they were $75, which seemed like a lot for a little piece of plastic, and I just can't see giving someone $150 for 5 cents worth of color.
I found a paint color called "tint" at a model shop and was thinking about trying that out... If the badged come out ok I'll clear coat them and then I'll move on to the door handles but if they look like poo I'll just clean them off with mineral spirits and forget the whole idea.
So, has anyone tried painting their badges themselves?

Hell, for $5.00 what do you have to lose? Even if you F'ed it all up. You could go buy a pint of what ever color paint you wanted remove everything you wanted painted and take it to a good paint shop and have everything done for like $150.00. emblems, door handles, what ever.

I'm familiar with the paint you are talking about. I doubt very much that it will hold up at all with this application. If you still want to try it, I recommend several VERY light coats to get it where you want it. Might want to find a piece of scrap chromed plastic to try it out on first.

I ended up using gloss black and it looks good. It looks fantastic from 5 feet but just looks ok close up. I screwed up with the glue on the front, got a little on the top of the paint, so I need to redo that one but over all it looks really good.
The paint is really soft though so I don't know what to expect for longevity. I wasn't sure if I would like the gloss black so I didn't top coat it yet, maybe that will harden the surface up.
While I'm happy with this for the badges; I am definitely taking the door handles to a pro.
I'll go take some pictures when it get's light out and post them.
Some tips & hints I figured out along the way:
1) Make sure the paint is completely dry, let it dry for at least a day, preferably two. Two light coats was enough, waiting about 2 hours inbetween coats (probably should wait longer).
2) You don't need a ton of glue, "A little dab'll do ya'!" I used a glue from one of the auto places that's made for gluing back on badges and what not to your car.
3) I put down a little layer of Goo-Gone around the area I was gluing to make cleaning up any spooged glue easier.
4) Goo-Gone takes off model paint! Doh!
Pictures to come...

Damn, forums upgrade deleted my post with pictures:
$74 Magical Platinum & Gold Diamond Encrusted Badges
Or at least they ought to be platinum & gold diamond encrusted for the price.
You know how much engineering you can buy for $150? You can get an Xbox for the Gods' sakes! Adding a little black pigment to a piece of plastic should not sextuple the price.
