I did this recently and it was a breeze. Her's how:
(1) To remove the shift boot you have to grasp the console where the shifter is located from the back. Gently but firmly lift up until it snaps out.
(2)Once that's done you pull the front portion of the console downards and it will come loose. BE CAREFUL WITH THE WHITE STRIP attached to the temperature control gauges. It's fragile and can break.
(3) Place a small piece of rubber tubing (ie bicycle inner tube) around the base of the shifter and clamp a vise grip plier to it. DON'T OVERTIGHTEN!!! Place another piece of rubber tubing around the shifter.
(4)Use another vise grip plier to turn the shifter counterclockwise while holding the plier gripping the base of the shifter steady. Take your time and the shifter should come loose. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE ALLOW THE SHIFTER TO ROTATE WHILE YOU ARE REMOVING THE SHIFTER. THIS COULD RESULT IN DAMAGE TO YOUR TRANSMISSION.
(5) DONE!!!

For the ****, what z350boy means is that you shouldnt let the "stick" itself rotate when you unscrew the ****, then you might risk damaging the trannie.
I had a bit of a struggle with this when i removed my stock ****, i was really scared that i might have snapped something in my gearbox as the **** was really tough to unscrew (wasent sure if the stick was rotating as well as the ****) basically the whole way until it finally came off!
Good luck
