Default BASF Paint?

Well I just dropped my Z off to get the ings kit painted and installed.

I asked the shop what type of paint they used I was told BASF. I'm just wondering hows the match of a DB Z with that paint formula?

Has anyone delt with BASF paint before?

What paint manufacturer is recommended to match db? I want to get the paint for my z to be perfect..not sure what manufacturer they should use. Is there a way I can get Rob from Custom paintworks to send me the paint using the VIN? IN this situation...would it be a perfect match?

I think you use Dupont for the finish to be 100% match right?

I used Glasurit 55 series and it came-out perfect. It's a 2-stage process though. So, you have to spray a basecoat, then a mid-coat and then clear it. The base looks like a purple color and then the mid-coat brings the depth out with a clear teal color. Pretty crazy how it works.

This is a pic of the basecoat and mid-coat mixed-up.

This is with the first basecoat on.

This is with the mid-coat on.

and this is with the clear on.

ahhh icic, interesting stuff. i wonder if they do it this way to ensure a better color match? BTW mike, where do you get that stuff and can you order it in large amounts? Im gonna be needing some chrome silver to paint my new kit and i was just gonna do with the regular ole ppg dbu or dbc paint but this stuff looks pretty goodl.

The battery cover in the pic was done with PPG. It's good paint, but I've found that the Glasurit (BASF) has more depth to it. Plus, you can play with it a little if there is some fading on the original paint due to weathering. The mid-coat is where it all comes to life.

I would do a search online for a Glasurit distributor in your area. "English Color" is where I get it locally here (Texas).

This little article speaks for itself. If Rolls Royce is using it...I think it's pretty good.

Price wise...any shop should be able to order/use it right? If i ask them to use glasurit...they should be able to get it?

Comparatively speaking, is it more expensive than other paint brands?

Yes. Body shops should be able to order some. They may try and convince you to use what they already have there though.

It is more expensive than most brands.

lawl, bout time they another auto paint company came out. PPG and autoair pretty much dominated a weak market with companies like shimron and dupont as rivals :\

Ima pick up a gallon of this silver and some candy red spray, candy red interior baby :0 well see how it comes out.

I have BASF paint on my Z. I don't know if it is becuase of BASF, but the stock "orange peel" texture to the paint is not as noticable in the BASF. (the rear hatch and roof were not painted) beautiful color, like boogie said, very deep.

no idea, but i DO know that if you want paint match for the 350Z, you need to use PPG and nothing else, thats if you want a PERFECT match of metallic/pearl/or whatever shade you have

I disagree. Glasurit matches MUCH better than PPG and has a deeper metalic blend. The paint is phenomenal. The pics above are proof in the pudding.

Also...for the '03-'05 SB Z's...Glasurit uses 55-1250, which is a blacker-than-black black which requires no mixing. It's a direct color match. Just add reducer and spray.
