Exclamation **URGENT** question regarding lost keys

Well, long story short my body shop LOST one of my key + keyfob.

I was wondering if I get a new key and reprogram the car/keys with a new code, if someone uses the old lost key to try and open my door, will the alarm sound?

Trying to think of cost effective way to ensure that my car is still "safe" without having to replace all the locks in my car.

Any input would be appreciated everyone!

hmm, this was moved...ok.

You'll most likely have to go to the dealer and they can do it by reprogramming a key with your car to work under a new code.

if they reprogram the keys for example, will the old key (the lost one) still be able to unlock my car and disable the alarm?

ask the bodyshop to order you a new set of keys.

well, they're paying for it for sure. But i'm just trying to get some confirmation about whether or not the old key can disable my alarm. Ie if they phsyically insert the key into my door and unlock the door, will the alarm go off since i've gotten a new set of keys?

The old key will open the door, but will not start the car, no alarm will go off.

if you want your old code, I think you need the number on a small plate that was given to you with your spare/valet keys.

i don't really need the old code, I want to make sure that if the lost key is found, it can't disable my alarm.

I say you have it reprogrammed. Then ask Rich about his alarm.

You must bring all your remaining keys and fobs to the dealer who will cut you one additional key and then reprogram all of them, PLUS the car's ECU to work only with each other. The old key will unlock door and even turn in the ignition but the car will not start.

If you want all functionality removed from the old key, your locks and ignition cylinder will have to be replaced and all new keys cut. If I were you, since it isn't coming out of your pocket, I say do it. Make the shop pay the dealership for everything.

OLD key will open the door.. and it WILL set off the alarm since the key WONT disable it by just turning a key. take your other keys to the dealer and have them cut u a new key and reprogram it along with the other keys.

thanks for the input guys, there seems to be conflicting reports about whether the alarm will go off if the OLD/LOST key is used to open the door...

i'm going to go with the safe route of cutting brand new keys and replacing the lock/ignition. It's the only way i'll get peace of mind.
