It's actually the Z from Yashio Factory that participated in the "Z Car Challenge."

Here's a link to Yashio Factory's page documenting the Z Car Challenge:
http://kaz.yashiofactory.co.jp/z_car_ch/index.htm

Reason why you see the ugly rear bumpers on the '08 Nismo Z's, or any other functional Z rear bumper is for aerodynamics.

The rear bumper for the Vertex full kit acts like a parachute, and hinders aerodynamics. Obviously, that's probably why Yashio Factory chose to go with the Nismo rears instead of the Vertex full rear bumper. Imagine having an exhaust like the HKS Ti, or any other exhaust not shaped like the stock exhaust, and the rear bumper further acts like a parachute. The stock exhaust actually fills the rear section and has a front fin to help funnel air through the rear eficiently.

Not to be ignorant, but wouldnt something like the TS Rear diffuser eliminate that problem regardless of exhaust or bumper type?

ps: I've only seen rear shots so i dont actually know how much it covers underneath the rear of the car.

The only reason I didn't go with the Vertex rear is that, I wanted to show the piping on the HKS exhaust. With the rear Vertex lip, I think it would cover it up... I didn't know about the whole parachute thing. I hope this answers your question.
