So...twisting off the stock **** (clarification)
So I'm about to install a nismo leather ****, and I was forum searching all the posts about installing a new shift ****.
What can I do to prevent from twisting the linkage? Some posts say you need to avoid it, and others say just have at it with vice grips...Any suggestions? This is a stock **** so I'm guessing the glue will still be on it.

Okay I found your post and popped off the little center console thing, and I just put one of my vice grips on the rubber part underneath the cotton? It doesn't seem like it would grip that well and I couldn't pull back the rubber very well to grab metal.

Yes, grip it tight on the rubber; it'll grip the shaft quite well with the help of the rubber. Then hold the vice grips stationary and twist like a ****. My tranny had been previously replaced, so the **** had been off before, but it was still a b!tch to unscrew.

I don't know maybe my 04's previous owner had already removed the **** once. When I put on the leather nismo shift ****, all I had to do was hold the the shifter still with one hand on the shift boot and turn the **** counter clockwise and it came right off. After I installed it, I took it out for a drive to get a feel of it. For some reason, I'm getting a bit more grinding on second gear than before, should I be worried that maybe I did something wrong? I wouldn't say it's grinding all the time, just a bit hard to push it into 1st and 2nd gear.

Twisted it off today, it wasn't that bad. The worst part is just the stress of worrying about the linkage rod twisting... I had one hand on the vice grip and twisted the **** with the strap wrench... My ****'s finish was unharmed from the strap wrench, it was a very effective method at preserving your old shifter. (Mine was an 03 and I had to get past the locktite)

hmmm not sure there, as long as it's not grinding or really awkward feeling I bet it's more of a psychology thing... I kinda had the same feeling when i was driving but the shift pattern runs like better stopped so..

I drove a bit more afterwards and I actually didn't notice any grinding at all, guess I just didn't stepped the clutch down enough before(thank god). I like the Nismo leather shift ****, it's shorter than the OEM, so kinda feels like you got a short shifter mod.
