all you need is some friends to help you out to remove the stock hatch. you need to pull down the rear head liner and then unbolt the bolts that hold the stock hatch and thats it. just swap over the 3rd brake light and the rubber lining and what not.

i called up a glass guy and they swapped my oem to the CF hatch for $70

that was basically it.

its four bolt and then just swapping the glass and fixing the fitment. But to remove the OEM hatch your going to need some extra hands . . . its heavy

Yeah, removal of stock hatch easy, +2 on needing friends to help you hold up the hatch.

My hatch had OEM glass in it so I cannot comment on the cost.

Fitment, mine has a small gap near the latch area but I dont notice it too much.

hey thanx guys i am gonna try to source out a piece of lexan glass since it sthe onlky way to make the hatch change worth while.. I read somewhere that the glass is where all the weight is and if you keep the stock glass your only saving a max of 10 or so pounds.

Elohite... thanks.. your video was what made me decide to buy the x02 exhaust.

I've got a lexan rear window kit. It's precut and drilled and includes all hardware. I also have the Seibon OEM hatches in stock. I'll shoot you a PM.

I find it hard to believe the steel hatch on a Z only weighs ten pounds more than CF. I've heard the same as a general rule of thumb (weight's in the glass), but someone who's actually weighed the difference will have to chime in on that one. I'd be hesitant to put lexan into a daily driver unless it's relatively easy/cheap to replace as I've read that it clouds and scratches easily and it shrinks and expands when heated and cooled which can make fitment a b!tch contributing to leaks...might not make sense for a DD.

The stock hatch w/o glass is pretty damn heavy. I'd actually say that most of the weight is NOT in the glass in a stock hatch.

i think i recall Fiberimages weighing the stock hatch w/o glass: ~56 pounds
New CF/Fiberglass reinforced Hatch (i had them put fiberglass in it, because i wanted to mount a wing eventually and i didnt want it to flex as much): 21.0 pounds. :/ a little heavier than i would have liked it.. but its still half of what it used to be.. I think James Chen/Axis drift car had the hatch to around 8pounds with no reinforcements..
for comparison, i believe the Varis Hatch with reinforced fiberglass is approximately 16 pounds. i dont know off hand the Seibon hatch weight..
my fitment was excellent.

Anyone know what the Asuka hatch weighs? How about the weight of the factory glass?
