Why do people put shiftboots in an automatic car?

i went to some dealerships around Vegas today. Saw a really nice fixed up z. the salesman opens the car with the remote without me saying anything. I told him i already have one, just browsing.
Thinking this nice piece of art had it all. I asked him i can start the engine and hear the exhaust he had (Injen) and i tried pressing in the clutch and there was none. Then i looked at the shifter a second time, and it was in an odd, straight 12 o clock position, and then i found out it was an auto. Sure fooled me. For some reason, the car wasn't as nice anymore (IMO, sorry auto guys). It's just the fact that the car looked so exotic and nice..and here it has an automatic. Can't get the great feel and shifting of an manual.
The funny thing is the salesman laughed it as well. He said the guy traded his car in for a porsche cayman S though. And said it was definitely manual. It was more of an upscale places that sold european cars. All the salesman drove either nice sports cars or luxury sedans. I think he even thought i didn't have a z.
My question is..why do people do that? Is there a reason behind it? I think the auto shifter and console peice looks great on the z. No reason why you should cover it up. I know automatics don't get respect but who cares. I think putting a shift boot around something nice is just being a poser. If there was something really messed up and you wanted to cover that piece up, that's fine. But to make it look like a manual is just retarded.

That's sad. The auto shifter and piece looks classy in the z. Looks odd with the boot in park. It's like me leaving my car in third gear.
As you can see from my sig, I have a 6mt, but IMO a shift boot looks cleaner even on an auto. As long as the owner isn't doing it to pretend they have a manual, and just like the cleaner look, then its okay in my book.

I find the P-R-N-D + - to be ugly and cheap looking. Adding a boot covers that ugly cheap looking plastic. I didn't do it to "look" like a manual. I just thought it added to the interior.

so you would cover it with a leather boot? If you ever take a look at what's underneath a z with a manual, you'll see what ugly is and why there is a boot there.
because they wanna look like they drive a manual...no lame excuse like they "don't like the look of the autoshift-gate" or because they like the "sporty leather look"...it's poseur all the way!

Even though I drive an auto, I have to side with the manual guys on this one. If I could fit a boot on and still see the letters like Superblack said I would def do it though. I hate my shift know though, 03's suck because the **** is on the side
That will get replaced but I will not put a boot on. I think is kind of poser too
but to each his own
