Default has anyone painted the hood themselves?

just like the title says...

has anyone painted the hood themselves?

I know it can be easily done at a paint shop with 200-300 bucks but i do want to try painting it myself before i send it to them...

If any of you have experience in this field, what paint should i use?

sam

p.s. I was also thinkin about if the paint comes out good then just get them clear coated at the paint shop. saves lotta bucks.

I don't think it would be too difficult to paint a hood on your own, but you would need the proper materials and equipment. In the end, it would probably be cheaper going through a body shop.

There have been a few members who have done this. Search out the user b-unit as I think he had a decent setup.

I've learned that in my case it's better to have a pro do stuff like that. You start off thinking in will be easy and you will save money. u usually run into problems and it becomes a huge head ache. I just factor installation into the price of anything i buy now.

I'd imagine that if you've never painted car parts before, it's going to take a lot longer than half a day. If it takes less, then you're probably better off just using a rattle-can because it's probably going to be turn out shitty anyway.

You'd probably have to paint, sand (or wet sand), repeat many, many times until you get a smooth coat. I'm also not sure how you plan on doing it for $20 unless your A.) Just buying some run of the mill paint and a brush or B.) Using the rattle-can.

I just don't see this turning out well... lol. To each their own though.

hahaha, hey man, I see nothing wrong with not wanting to spend more on a paint job than the car's worth. I know my winter beater hatch is getting the rattle can treatment this summer.

I have painted a few cars before... It takes a good amount of time and a good amount of money to do it right.... What color is your car?? If its red or Pearl, those are the most expensive paints to buy..If its the PPW , the only right way to do it is to blend it into the fenders and bumper or the paint will be WAY off... Also the only paint to use would be basecoat clearcoat..Single stage would look horrible and not last. You would be looking at least about $130 in supplies.. Most places won't sell paint in less than a quart. The last time I bought a quart of paint in red it ran me about $83. Then you have to buy the clear, primer, sandpaper... Once its done you will have to wetsand the area and machine buff it out.... Hope that helps...

Also, depending on where you live, there are alot of laws forbidding painting outside a booth... Most booths to rent will be around $60-150 an hour..

This me doing the whole painting the hood is not only for the money sake but for my experience.. I like to do things to my car.. not always pay someone to do it for me.. i feel better when i do it even though it turns out like ****. Just my opinion...

and thank you tartman...

I was just simply... SIMPLY.

gonna sand the hood.

then use the "primer" paint to paint over the hood.

those two steps... nothing like paint booth or anything.

You will have to use a spray gun to cover it correctly, if you do a can its gonna come out blotchy... BUT if you use the spray gun with the compressor outside and you get caught its a HUGE fine in California, I think about $7500

They have a cheap one.... It doesn't splatter like a spray can does..(A regular spray can spits and you get alot of overspray. . ) You need an air compressor for it... You just spray back and forth in even strokes..You set the amount of paint coming out and how "fanned" out the spray comes.
