Default DIY cheap bumper scrape guard

I don't know why I didn't do this to my ING's front bumper after it got painted long ago, but I got a new Aerosync bumper that I need to some protection on the bottom from scrapes.

I know they sell the official Nismo one for around $80 or so but I couldn't find them in stock, so I set out to look for a cheaper alternative.

Well I found this at a local Pepboys for I think $15...

It is a very hard rubber almost plastic material, but still workable around corners. Just cut a small pie shape piece on the inner side when bending to fit a curve.

I attached mine with nuts and screws even though it has double sided tape affixed to it already. Just wanted to make sure it wouldn't come off on the first scrape.

I also had to drill a bigger diameter to make the screw head flush. I didn't have black screws so I just used black touch-up paint to cover the screw head once bolted.

It was difficult to get a good picture, but you get the idea...

So, there you have it. If you need a cheap way of protecting the lips of your bumper just use some door molding! They also come in different size widths.

I did exactly that on a previous car, and it ripped and frayed rather quickly, which looked like **** Really, it didn't protect anything as it just peeled away from the bumper between the attach points. Not trying to pu pu on your thread, and if it works out for you great, but just telling you my experience.

Did you use the same door molding? This one I got is really hard material that would not fray as easily as other rubber materials. I tried scraping it on cement and rough sandpaper and it didn't really get frayed.

But if it does, then I alway just cut away the frayed material until its all gone. Rather have the molding get messed up than the bumper itself.

Thx for the info though

Identical product, same box and everything. I cut out the fake "air vents" on the front bumper of my previous car, and lined the edge with the door-edge guard from the same brand too. That stood up well, but putting the side molding on the bumper really didn't end up protecting a thing when I used it. Yes, of course I would rather have the molding get messed up than the bumper, that's kind of the point What I'm saying is that when I would scrape it would just peel away the molding and scratch my bumper anyway.

But, maybe I didn't use enough screws, or otherwise secure it strong enough. If it's working out for you, then awesome...I wish it did for mine.

Not sure where and it's late so ur gonna have to look, I believe on 350z-motoring.com but maybe here one of my recent lowering spring threads dude posted pics of a thing he made out of garage door insulation (stuff at the bottom) looked like be perfect although way thicker and more visible then the door molding but IMO didn't look bad kinda makes bumper look lower. They sold something simalar on eBay too. Just search my name

Does anyone know where I could source the original Nismo bumper add-on? MyNismo.com lists them as "out of stock".

I'm really just guessing but I think the Nismo V1 bumper is discontinued, and therefore they probably discontinued any related add-on pieces.

Will do. I'm switching up front bumpers so we don't have to be twins any more!

After 3 years, they're still on there holding up. I know I have scrape numerous times already. Just letting people know about the cheap easy fix to protect the lip, since this thread was bumped up from the dead. ;p
