I knew what I was getting myself into the 1st time I thought about removing the spare tire and building a sub woofer box in it's place, with the woofer firing upwards. It meant pretty much giving up all that trunk space.
It's been pretty rough over the years hauling my cleaning gear and overnight duffle bag, when I drive to other cities for car shows. I have a small plastic tub I usually use to tote around my cleaning gear. It fits pretty snug on the front seat, but I wanted to get away from that incase I have a passenger. This, and I just plain out don't care to carry anything in my front seat.
A couple nights ago I made a little trip to Walmart to see what I could pick up. I found a plastic shelving system, made for a pantry. I also found a shallow plastic storage container, made to roll under your bed.
The trick was to make something that would hover over my sub, allow me to play the stereo, and allow for speaker excursion clearance.
I had to cut the plastic container down a few inches from it's original depth, so it would clear the upper hatch. It still has a nice 4 inch lip all the way around. The next step was attaching it to the base. I used liquid nails at 1st, but it would not heal. It's been pretty cold lately(40's), so the glue wouldn't heal. It remained puddy-like. I ended up picking up some 2 part eppoxy last night at Home Depot. I sanded down the mating areas, and applied the glue. It was solid as a rock this morning.
The shelf is very sturdy, light weight, and removable. It may not look like much, but it'll haul around my cleaning gear when I attend shows.
Here's a few pictures I took with my camera phone this morning. In one picture, you can see the rim of the sub woofer under the base.
Enjoy the pics guys...

Isn't that going to slide around on the highway/freeway/interstate/(whatever they call it in your neck of the woods)?
In any case nice work!
Lastly, I wish it were 40 degrees here.
