base z owner please come, HID expert welcome!
base Z owners! any one got a HID conversion kit? i really want to get one because it enhances the look and night time driving ability.
i am looking at the one from Philips, but i cant decide how many k should i get! people said 4100k is the best because it provides most usable light, they are pure white. i prefer a little bluish, (like the one on the GS430, BRIGHT AS HELL AND NICE BLUE COLOR) if i go with higher k HID, i will need to sacrifice the brightness.
you guys got any comments? btw, Philips made 4000k, 5000k and 6000k. please give me advise.
besides, where can i get them for cheap?
can i install it myself or do i need to bring it to a shop?
THANKS A LOT GUYS!

its CATZ, and i heard that they are no longer selling HIDS due to new laws or something. not sure if its true or not. but there are other brands of HIDS that are pretty good. brands such as McCullough, HID Plus, and a whole bunch of cheaper brands for sale on ebay. as for kelvin rating, i'd recommend you to get 5000K or 6000k so you can definitely notice the color, especially since the z has a projector.

the bulb size is H7...anyways. i have a base Z...i got 4300K philips HID...and it took me about 3-4 hours to install. its alot of work to put in because the passenger side is almost impossible to find a good place to mount the ballast. 2nd of all, u have to drill a hole in the headlight housing cover, not a big deal if u just drill the rite size hole and use the right size grommet and glue together so its air tite and ur ready to go. i still have to redo my install cuz i was limited in time and i kinda rushed it. hope that helps...repy if u have more questions.

1) Get a standard D2R bulb if light output is what you are after. That should be around 4300k. It will emit a classic HID appearance. Anything above that will result in less useable light.. you make the decision whether or not you care for "blue light." Personally, I drive in canyons and could use all the light possible.. and could care less about what people think my lights look like. I am not into this "hyper white" fast and hot import furious nights trend.
2) The laws regarding the sale of HID "retrofits" have not changed, just the amount of enforcement. Many companies have been sent letters from the NHTSA requesting proof that their products comply with DOT lighting requirements. Amazingly enough, many of these companies are not willing to put their product to the test and after all this hype and marketing, are pulling the plug on their products.
3) If you're going to go with a "kit" do yourself the favor and go with a D2R, the D2S bulb is not the right one for this application. The Z33 uses a combination of projector AND reflector technology. A wise move would be to use the factory D2R HID bulb.
I went to Circiut City and bought the Eurolite super plasma 4100k for $30.
Congrats, you are the proud owner of a new set of halogen bulbs which probably perform worse than your originals.

ps: The Lexus GS light/color you are fond of, is probably just a regular 4300k bulb.

I have a base Z with HID rated at 6000K. Personally, I find the light just right for me. I know nothing about this so I had it installed professionally. The brand I got was Max K2 from Japan also.

Seems to be some confusion here between true HID ( gas discharge ) lamps and the so called Zenon incandescent lamps. Its easy to check - if they have filaments they are NOT HID.
One of the great advantages of true HID is its efficiency - most HID kits are around 35Watts input but generate the same light output as MUCH higher rated traditional lamps. ( HID does draw a current spike on startup though ).
If you are going to go with larger conventional lamps just watch out you don't cook the wiring. In an earlier experimental phase I installed 100W traditional highs and lows and the wiring temperature was a real concern ( fuses wr'nt happy either ).
Summary - HID is the way to go - but its not a cheap fix, and there's not a lot of room to install the balasts and igniters on a Z, even getting to the #$%^ lights is a trauma.
