Default Nismo Wing owners please check in

Has anyone that has a Nismo wing replaced the hatch 'stays'? I'm referring to the hydraulic lifters that hold the hatch up (Nissan called them stays). I find it really frustrating to have to pull up on the hatch before opening it, or having to pop it once, then pull up as I pop it a second time. Anyone else share this frustration and actually modify their hatch to take this into account? If so, please tell me what brand (with poundage specs) you used to replace your factory stays with. Any help would be terrific. Thanks,

Mike

Default Rear Deck Lid

I read in a different thread that you can take the OEM counter weight out of the rear deck lid and that should take of this for you. The weight is ok for just the spoiler , but not ok for the wing.

Removal of the weight should make it about the same as OEM with only the spoiler.

As for a replacement ,. no I havent heard of anyone doing this.

Take care.

Actually for my car, removing the weight is still not quite enough.

Yuichi at StrictlyZ.com was looking into changing the hydraulics...call StrictlyZ and see if they found anything.

HA! This is specifically my problem. I posted a thread a while ago, but nothing much came up. I removed the weight, it's not enough. The trunk still takes two pops to get up. Somebody once told me that Nissan has replacement stays, but I haven't heard anything about it.

Seems like if the product was designed by a Nissan subsidiary, they'd have a fix to it.

Yes, that's exactly what I wanna do...change those hydraulic lifters. I've been told that even Pep Boys sells them, but I don't know the weight that the factory ones support, so I'm not sure which ones to buy to potentially fix the problem. Anyone know the approximate weight of the Nismo wing?

I took out the weight and when you hit the button, it unlocks but you still have to give it a little tug with your other hand to open it up. In other words, if you simply hit the button, let the button go, and then try to lift the hatch, it won't work. BUT, if you do it with two hands (hit the button with one hand and lift with the other) it works fine.

Mine is the real NISMO wing. Don't know if the replica is any different.

Mine is the real Nismo as well...they're new design, actually...they made a couple design improvements within the last 2 months. Anyway, it seems as if removing the weight isn't working for people, so I just want to replace those lifters. I guess I have my research cut out for me. When I figure it out, I will post the fix in this thread. Likewise, if anyone figures it out before me, please do the same.

Talking New Struts on the way

Hey guys,

I did get a chance to talk to some NISMO guys at the track day. In Japan they now sell new struts for the NISMO wing. I believe they will be avalible when NISMO officially launches their NISMO parts here hopefully before Dec?

But they did come up with a fix for that so I'll keep you guys up to date!

I have the nismo wing with the same problems described. So what I did was put those clear plastic bumpers you put under furnature etc. they stick on. Put them on either side of the hatch where the black cylinder things meet the metal on the body of the car. The thickness of the "bumpers" was 3/8. This causes the springs to have more tension and therefore opens the hatch just enough to pull normally.

Nice fix. I think the black bumpers are more important than the stays.

If you look at the installation instructions for the Track spoiler (at the Courtesy Parts website) you can see that there are replacement stays which are used for that wing.

I just pop out the cover underneath the rear wiper and there was no counter weight, so where is it?

It is a small almost "butterfly" shaped flat piece of metal. It only weighs about 2-3 lbs. It is under the black plastic cover on the hatch. Right up from the latch on the hatch inside.

i have a better fix to this...i was reading this and i was asking myself why i dont have this problem
then i realized it was because i have the evo-r base

they cut the nismo base and just left the 2 Legs...so right now i have the same setup as you guys minus the heavy middle part

plus my wing is CF so maybe its lighter

The easy fix is to increase the thickness of the black bump stops on eitherside of the hatch. The stays are fine because they can hold the hatch open when it is open - perfect weight/ power ratio, but at the beginning, you need that extra nudge to push the hatch open, increase the compression on the black bump stop springs do the trick. Give it a shot.

The black bumpers work JUST PERFECT for mine (original nismo parts).. Really recommand people to use that instead of changing to those expensive stands!

cheers,
