Smile Rattle in the rear - solved!

Hope this will help somebody.

My car recently developed some rattle in the rear that was driving me mad. It sounded like loose hatch or similar. I adjusted the latch to no avail. I removed all trim but it became only louder. I complained to the dealer at last service but they could not find anything and said they would need the car for couple of days. I did not like the idea. I searched two forums and noticed that many people have similar problem but no solutions. Some of them took their cars to dealers 2-3 times and still could not get rid of the noise.

Last weekend I made a final attempt to find the source of that rattle. And I found it. It was coming from top of the shock absorbers. The rubber cylinders that hold it were squeaking with low frequency. This squeak was resonated by car body and with added stereo effect from both sides sounded like rattling hatch. I took both of them out disassembled all parts around the top bracket and slightly lubricated them. And yes!!!! The noise has gone completely. My car sounds like brand new again.

I was getting a rattle from the third brake light. I added foam thing padding and that solved the issue.

You've got more energy than I do. I usually just turn up the tunes.

Not really a lot. It took me less than 1 hour to complete work on both sides. And it was definetely worth it.

that added lube will aid in a quicker premature failure of the hatch shocks..........but those end up needing replacing after a year and half anyways....

stock hatch shocks bite big time...

^^ I think he was talking about the actual shocks on the suspension of the car not the hatch.

My car has the same rattle from the rear for a while. It took me 5 visits to the dealer to get it solved. It was the rear suspension which needs to be lubricated. The noise is gone and I am so happy now!

What part(s) of the rear suspension did they lubricate?
