Default gas shocks for hood???

Anyone do away with the ugly prop rod for the hood and go for modded gas shocks for the hood. I'm thinking of doing this, and looking for pics.

I'm pretty sure that nissan didn't install gas shocks on the hood because it's so light. Think about it, it would be very easy to damage the Aluminum hood by trying to slam it down.

looks like there are mounting points on the side of the hood for the gas struts. Just not sure what to use. Then again, with aluminum hood we have, I'll be afraid of it getting bent because of no support on the tip of the hood (ie prop rod.)

Default Reasons

I can think of a few reasons Nissan didn't use them.

Added cost
Added weight
Possibly not enough clearance
Possible bending of lighweight hood.

If it is just the first two reasons then it should be a possible upgrade. However, figuring out the angles, clearance, mounting points, and spring pressure required would probably take some trial and error. (unless some already makes a kit)

I would also be affraid of bending the hood while working the kinks out of the system.

But I bet the first person who comes up with a good kit could sell a bunch of them.

Default Gas Hood Struts

I purchased after-market gas struts for my Miata and it worked very well. There was very little additional pressure required to close the hood. If one were designed properly with good attachment points I'd buy some in a second.

I know that some have already done this. I have seen pictures of Zs with them installed. I also thought it would be nice to have them, but have not seen anyone write up an install.
