I searched around but couldn't anything regarding any direct replacement tails for the factory LED tails. Everything I found online seems to be for the 03-05 Z as well. Anyone know of any?

Yes I know how awesome the factory tails are and that tint overlays are out there, so no need to tell me.

 

Check TheZSource ...and I think Z1's got some JDMs too. There's a bunch of "3d" tails floating around. I think I saw them on Optionsauto or Andysautosport. Maybe UltimateZ. I don't remember and I'm too lazy to find them for you.

 

Well I saw a few aftermarket LED tails out there, but to my understanding, they are made for 03-05 which have different connections. Or am I wrong? Is the plug on all tails the same?

 

This, for instance, should work on all years. Unless they put some sort of adapter on it that you would remove for 03-05 models, I don't see why any other tail light system wouldn't work on any model. Plus, they look sick.

Thanks man. Yeah, I saw those, although I am unsure how they will look on a black Z. Dumb statement, but I assume those JDM tails are also LED. They appear to be, but one website that had them said they come with "bulbs".

Guess I will search around and see if anyone with a black Z has these, perhaps with the tint overlays. Just want to get a different look, but not those goofy 3D tails.

If it's authentic JDM it should be LED. Otherwise, I'd say knockoff; avoid them like the plague.

ed: I'm putting them on my Z which will be repainted black (at some point-GOD it's expensive...) In my head it looks awesome...

 

Here is a thread with a bunch of them on different color Zs. It doesn't looks too bad on black, but nothing that gets me excited. Perhaps with overlays it would look better on black.

I might just take the OEMs off and do something with them myself before I spend 400 bucks on new tails that I might not even like.

It shocks me that nobody sells OEM style tails in black. I saw some on Andy's Autosport, but they have more LEDs than OEM and I am not sure if the wiring is the same since it says it's for 03-05.

 

Get the ricest tails you can find. Then turn around and sell your OEM ones to someone here who doesn't like rice. Aftermarket Tails FTMGDL

The only ones that you should even possibly consider are the JDM clear tails. Not my cup of tea, but still 1 million times better than any of the eGay rice tails.

 

I wouldn't consider JDM rice at all... and if you're considering changing the style of your tail lights, JDM is really the only alternative to smoked lenses (which really wouldn't look all that bad on a black car). For me, it's a matter of eliminating the red plastic look. Just like how 06+ headlights eliminate the yellow plastic stripe of the previous years. Really, making that change is the same as going JDM for the brake lights. If you believe that's even the slightest bit rice then I really feel for you, man...

You suggested he was considering ricing out his car when the conversation was clearly leaning towards JDM tail light conversion. You may not have said it outright but your words certainly convey the idea that you believe JDM tails to be rice.

Well that is the thing, I don't want those ugly 3D tails or anything of that nature. I was looking for something that looks like the OEM tails, just black. Like the JDM lights, just change the chrome to black.

I wouldn't call tails rice per se. I know we all have different definitions of what rice is, but the overall understanding is that ricey parts are those that give the illusion of performance but don't actually help (and sometimes even hurt) performance.
