Thanks! this doc. confirms you can damage your tranny by twisting the **** off without counter force. wonder how many here have screwed up their trannies doing this the wrong way. The radiator hose is a good idea. I screwed up my stock **** by using the cloth towel method suggested to me by others on this site.

There is no way to get around it. The stock shift **** will be toast even if you use a piece of radiator hose or a towel. I dare not take a pic of my stock ****. I dont want to scare everybody. So I plan on ordering another stock OEM **** in the future. I keep all my stock parts after I have done a mod.

I used a strap wrench on my **** with shop towel wrapped around the **** and it came off no problem. Zero damage. Those things are very expensive.

(no **** jokes here. We are adults after all.)

I spent the better part of yesterday trying to get the **** off via that guy's method, ie, using only a towel and not using two wrenches. The result? Mega scratches on ****, and now my tranny is making unusual noises. Then i read further down on that guy's thread and learned the right way to do it. And that is an old thread, and the moderators knew about it early on but did nothing about it.
Lesson? Read the whole thread before doing anything.

Wierd, Guess i lucked out on mine. All I did was wrap a towel around the base of the **** and crank on it with a big pair of adjustable pliers. Came off rather easy after all the hardships i had heard about it. best thing is, zero damage to the stock ****.

I didnt use a hose, just a cloth and mine came out nicely... What will make it easier is having another person help you

One hold the Lever in place while the other turns the wrench...

There are several threads on removing the shifter *****. Just do (another) search for "shift **** removal" and they will show up. If you want pictures, you will probably be able to find some in the other threads, but you can also find pictures at RedlineGoods.com which has a breakdown for removing both the shift **** and the boot. If you are not replacing the boot, then you should stop after you remove the shift ****...

Default 06 shift **** removal

Has anyone with an 06 removed their shift ****? I had an 03, and it was a pita to remove. Just wondering if the 06 is as hard. Any tips?

Thanks.

Well, I can answer my own question, and the answer is: yes, it is as much of a pita as the 03. Finally got it off though. The voodoo does look nice.

Question Shift **** removal...cracking sound?

I tried unscrewing the OEM shift **** on my 03' Z, but its really damn stiff! I used a vicegrip to hold the shifter rod from turning, and used another wrench with a cloth around it to remove the shifter. It was all going good until i hear a cracking sound. This could have been the **** starting to turn loose, but i didnt want to end up breaking anything. Does anyone know if that cracking sound is supposed to happen, or do you really just have to go ahead and apply that much force? I dont really want to ruin my OEM shifter, but if its gotta go, its gotta go, lol.

Let me know what you guys think.

thanks

The cracking sound may be the dried up hardened glue you have just cracked and that is part of the removal. I did mine and remember the sound when the glue let loose to remove the shift ****.......make sure you get a tight grip on the bottom shaft of the shifter so you dont twist and break the shifting mechanism

Here's a pic of what the bottom of the shifter is attached to. No need to worry about breaking anything.

that is not true if you twist the shaft enough it will break ...do a search and find out and I know you have been around since 03 so your not a noob but the metal that holds the shaft is flimsy Myke. I remember someone had damaged it twisting it and the tsb even states you must hold the bottom part to keep it from twisting ....
