Default Carbon fiber issues...

Hey guys,

So I just bought a Seibon Carbon fiber hood for my 07 nismo 350z. Just put it on, and not 2 weeks later I am having problems with random rading spots. I finally noticed that they are all directly above where there are any holes drilled. I had carbon fiber on my last car and a small amount of fading happened after a year or so, and I know this can happen from heat and not taking care of it but what could be the problem with it just 2 weeks??
Seibon should be getting back to me and hopefully sending me another one, but I don't want the same thing to happen again.

Any advice would be awesome, Thanks!!!

"random rading spots"
"above where there are any holes drilled"

Think you mean fading above some drilled holes??? Why are there drilled holes in your hood? Cover all CF till you paint or reclear it. Sun does crazy shiz to CF.

Some people have put an extra layer of clear coat for added protection. Seibon hoods seem to be a hit or miss when it comes to fitment and what your describing.

You should ALWAYS spray a clear with UV coating on your carbon parts. A lot of them come with NONE of it, so fading will happen.

There are drilled holes from places that screws and other things have to sit though. It's hard to explain this online, but my last hood had it too. My last hood was VIS and I never had to clear coat it, same with my current roof. I'm just wondering why its happening where these holes are.

it probably just fades sooner on the spots where there are holes underneath because there is less material for the sun to penetrate.

I get the process of carbon fiber. I've had a lot of it, just never seen this happen so soon. When it comes to Seibon vs. VIS, In general I've had much better luck with VIS wherever manufactured...
I kinda disagree with everyone when it comes to having to clear coat it right after you buy it for "extra" protection. I've never had to do this before and in my experience the people who have, it looked like sh*t and you could barely see the weave.
I know for a fact that these spots were not caused by the sun. Because my car stays inside most of the day until night time. So, I'm guessing it has something to do with the heat from the engine, and where there are holes there's not enough material to protect it. I was really just seeing if this was a 350z thing or what..

I clear all my CF pieces again before install just for added protection. In my case, it always looked "shinier" (better) afterwards anyway. Also, when I bought my Siebon hood it had an orange peel effect. After sanding and re-clearing, it looked much better. Still no issues with fade spots after almost 3 years with it.

I actually have a whole other question now...

Seibon is sending me a new hood.. I've looked everywhere for hood underliners and I can't find any, I've even contacted Nissan and they said it is not made. Does anyone know where I can get one, or what materials would be good to make one myself.
Thanks!

Couldnt you just use Dynamat? I would think it would be easy to put on.
