Default Xenon headlights for Base model

Newbie here! Good to see such a populated forum dedicated to the Z.

I've had my base 350z for a month now and have been considering getting Xenon bulbs in place of the halogen ones I currently have.

I've read through a few previous threads regarding xenon and apparently the bumper must first be removed before replacing the bulbs (please correct me if i'm wrong). More importantly, where can I get the bulbs? I've found some kits on eBay but I'm unfamiliar with the wattage range and how that correlates to the color of the light.

So, my main questions are:

* What are some good manufacturers of xenon lights for the baseZ?

* Where can I find these lights?

* Does the bumper need to be removed or can I remove the two front wheels to replace my current halogen bulbs.

Any information on how I can do this right would be greatly appreciated. Cheers in advance!

I don't think you have to remove the front bumper, I think just the fenderwells. But if you ever do need to remove the front bumper, don't let it scare you. It's not hard at all. 5 mines to take it out. Very easy.

HID kits are more than just a bulb, they require a ballast and igniter.

Make sure you order a D2R bulb, it is made for reflector housings which is what the Z has. The lens on the outside only makes it look like a projector.

4100K temperature will get you the best light output. 8000K kits are ridicuclous. The light output is sissy compared to 4100K. I know because that's what I ordered for my bike. I should have gotten a 4100K kit.

Our new sponsor Importhookup.com is offering a special on Brightstar HID kits. You should look into it.

Hope that helps,
Victor

Victor,

Cheers for the quick response! Wow, so I need more than just bulbs then, huh?

Here are the links to a couple of eBay auctions I've found. Tell me what you think

OK, the first link is just a replacement bulb, it uses the blue tint on the bulb to make it try to look like HIDs. But they don't go anywhere close to real HID. In fact I believe the blue tint makes it have less light output.

The 2nd link is a blue tinted blue for your signals or reverse lamp. It's just a cosmetic addition. I don't like it personally because every teenager with a Honda has those bulbs in their 1989 beater Civic.

Mike,

Cheers for the help. So, I'm gonna have to search specifically for the HID kit then. Cool, it's good to know what I need to be looking for. The sponsor you showed me is good (and the price isn't bad either). If you know of any other sources for a HID kit I'd appreciate it!

lol @ the civic comment. I know exactly what you mean

BJF2k, your sig and icon is freakin me out.

Mike, you said order the D2R bulb but importhookup sells H7s; is that the same thing?

and is the non-hid base model housing the same as the higher models with hids? i heard they were and it kinda threw me off from getting hids.

H7 is the headlight socket size, H7 is correct for the Z.

D2R is the type of bulb. D2R is made for reflecto type headlights and D2S bulbs are made for projector type headlights.

Ok, sorry to bump this topic again but I had another question

From people's past experiences, what would be better? I can go to my dealer and buy OEM Xenon headlights for my Z (which would cost more, but it would be factory) or I can buy an aftermarket HID kit and install it myself. What would be a better option in terms of price, color/light output, etc? Thanks!

Awesome, yeah let me know how they look. I've been talking to Tim Lau from importhookup.com (who by the way is a very cool guy) and he told me they might be having a Thanksgiving deal going on over the break.

Also, I initially thought he only had 5000K bulbs, but apparently they also carry a 6500K kit. I think I might go for the 6500K kit since it has a bit of bluish-white in the color
