Smile Shorty Antenna(PICS)

First thing I did to my Z when I got it was switch my antenna mast to a shorter one from Altamini. Reception is still good. I will eventually have the antenna mounted to the roof. In the meantime, a few pics of it's current location.

Looks good. How are you going to mount the antenna to the roof.

Same thing I did when I got mine. Replaced it with the S2K OEM one.

But after seeing the ones on Mercedes at the auto show...

makes me want to get a smaller one.

The mast was about $20. Ordered it through abdracing.com a while back. Install is simply unscrew the stock one, and screw the new one in.

I have this one... bought on eBay for $10.00 from Germany.
Reception IS affected. Weaker stations come in poorly. I don't recommend this antenna, but I liked the way it looks and listen mostly to CD's or local stations.

I like the looks of yours. When you say reception is "good"... what exactly does that mean ?
Have you noticed a degradation on weaker stations ?
Where can this be purchased, and approximate cost ?

i beleive the MB ones are for GPS, not just radio.

and they are quite expensive to replace too!

Bat..
Do you know part number. I've checked their site and I didn't seen anything that looked like your antenna... but they use the same pic for everything "antenna" related.
Thanks
Also, could you comment regarding any degradation of reception, especially on weaker stations.

Try altamini.com as well. Reception is good, however am reception isn't all that great. I added another antenna on the inside just behind my rearview mirror, much better.

They look nice, but check out courtesy auto parts, they have 3" chrome and 5 1/2" chrome ones for sale.

Grutter,

I currently have a shorty antenna like JmanZ. However, after seeing a pic of yours I ordered one off of Ebay. I will let you know how my reception is. Maybe it is your area? Regardless, your is by far the best looking antenna I have seen thus far.

How is teh fitment? Are there any gaps. If so is a washer required? Thanks.

Thanks for the compliments. I agree... it is a good looking antenna. (Thanx for not commenting on the dirt). Fitment left a very small gap. I used a black o-ring to fill, so I could tighten down nicely and eliminate any space. Totally unnoticeable. Reception isn't real bad... just noticeable on weaker stations. Strong stations come in fine. Not bad for less than $10. I'd change it to one like Blue Batmobile has if it also solved the reception issue. (lots of stations are "weak" in NC). I was also thinking about an internal antenna if I could find something stealth. Will be interested in seeing your results.

I could do a test on these things, if I had lots of money that is.

up at my school, the stations come in jussstt barely. itd be easy to tell which affect the reception slightly or not. thats the reason I dont get any, the slightest loss in reception and I wouldnt get any stations.

The 3.54" antenna that BlueBat posted is the antenna that I bought. You WILL lose reception for weak stations.

It was my understanding that the shark fin antenna is the GPS antenna. I don't believe it has any 'dual functionality' to act as an FM antenna (does anyone care about am ?) Therefore, I doubt seriously that it will work for us.

I would like to correct my earlier post.

The Shark Fin antenna is used for the cell-phone kit (BMW)

It will not work as an FM antenna, XM radio antenna etc. I have read that on the SAAB, a similar antenna can is used for OnStar, but that it can't be used for both Cellphone and Onstar.

There is also a combination GPS Nav and GSM Cellphone sharkfin antenna, but not aware if any vehicle manufacturer uses it as standard equipment.
