Red face Headlight Questions..

Hey guys, Im new to the forums and recently bought 04 ppw 350z. Im new to this so no bashing please.

I recently bought a new pair of headlights because the orignal ones seemed to have a crack and fogged up. The question i wanted to ask is.. do I need to buy a new set of HID BULBS or do i need to also get the whole HID kit? Either way im planning to get 6k or 8k bulbs for the headlights.

(Not to sure if Z's come stock HID's)

Help is most appreciated!!

What trim of a z do you have? I have a touring ( has leather Bose system ect) and this comes with stock hids. Other models of 350z's didn't. If you have one equipped with stock hids you have to buy hid oem headlights, or like I did buy a pair of non- hid headlights heat them up in the oven and ur original ones and replace the plastic lens, it's a lot of work but saves you a lot of money. If money doesn't matter buy oem ones.

I have the track model. Couldnt I just buy HID kit and just connect it to my stock headlights?

You should just be able to get away w/new bulbs which are pretty pricey too but better than a whole kit.
What year is your Z?

Bulbs do not determine if headlights are HID or not. HID is generally a xenon bulb with ballasts. Its a system. You cannot simply swap bulbs to make no-HID to HID.

The OEM headlights are HID. If you are uncertain remove the bulb. Post photos here.

Your track model came with HID from the factory. All 04-05's came with HID unless they were base model. I'm surprised davidv didn't grill you for this...

Anyway, what replacement headlamps did you buy? OEM or aftermarket? Can you show us? Are they HID or halogen?

If they are HID, you can simply swap your old stuff over to it no problem. You can move to some higher color temp HID bulbs as well. However the stock color is the brightest, going higher to 6000K or 8000K will get more color but be more dim. They must be D2R or D2S socket type. Get D2R if they have them, if not the D2S will work but you'll have to cut a little notch in the plastic base of the bulb so it will fit in your headlamp projector.

The headlights I just bought are the same besides the blackening on some areas on the housing. <a target='_blank' href='http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/824/imag04111.jpg/'><img src='http://img824.imageshack.us/img824/7452/imag04111.th.jpg' border='0'/></a>

Im hoping these headlights are just a simple swap i can do with new bulbs. (8000k). Is ther a way you can tell me just from the picture if I will need to do anything else inorder for these to work on my Z?

Not certain what you bought. Look at the socket. It either accepts a xenon bulb or it does not.

Where did you buy the headlamps from? Is there a web page with specs we can look at? We can't tell anything just from a pic of the outside... If these are HID and you have stock HID ballasts, then yes you can just swap to 8000K D2R HID bulbs. However I would not recommend over 6000K, especially as the 03-05 headlamp design does not really yield good output compared to a true projector headlamp. With 8000K you'll be putting about as much light on the road as the rusty old dodge caravan driving next to you.
