Default I shaved the firewall with pics

Folks several people have asked me to post up how/what i did to my engine bay. so first lemme apologize now for the picture quality, these are all iPhone
pics as I had not planned on an DIY for this.

I personally have about 400 hours in this project and the guys at CIN Motorsports have another 200 or so hours in this. In short this is an extreme project, the wiring alone took me over 150 hours.

For those that don't know me or my Z that well, it is all about weight reduction. and I have always hated the false firewall and the way it fills up the engine bay.

So all in all we did:
  • Cams, Kelford 282 cams and BC springs
  • Chase bays Willwood master cylinder (deleted the OEM brake booster and master cylinder)
  • swapped up to the ReVuP oil pump
  • Relocated the power steering the other side (thanx Phunk for the insights), we did this to lower cg.
  • Lowered the motor ~1", again to lower the cg
  • deleted the false firewall
  • wire tucked the engine bay
  • wire tucked the engine
  • fabbed a (finally) functional catch can
  • Upgraded to 440cc injectors and APS fuel rails
  • we are running a unique fuel system.
  • relocated the IPDM to the cab of the car,
  • relocated the battery to the rear of the car.
  • removed the OEM oil cooler
  • properly deleted the heater core (verse what i had done earlier)
  • new DXD racing clutch!

This is pretty where we started, pulled the motor.

Then I cut the false firewall out.

and a few other cuts.

Then Bobby set the Tig welder up and I stitch welded the entire front clip.

Andy made a few block off plates.

I cleaned off the extra spot welds and other things that i no longer use.

Prepping for Krylon, because race car!

After the rattle can.

Motor in place.

I love the room I have to work on things now

This was taken at ZdayZ, I haven't had time to really take more pictures. I basically had to run around there at the last minute and not only put the Z back together and get the event packed up and on the road to make sure the other 700+ people that made it to ZdayZ were happy

This is the electrical part of the mod, at least what i have pictures of

The Chassis harness out with IDPM

The engine bay harness mildly modified

more wire pulling

New fuse panels mounted the to firewall

Pulling the harness back in

Brake wiring

brake wiring installed

This is the Engine section

Just showing off the new cams

heater core delete, plus a glamour shot of the APS fuel rails

finally swapped out the exhaust studs for bolts

A little detail on the wire tuck.

a close up of the power steering pump relocation

I'll take a few more this weekend, I'll actually have it at the track to shake it down for the first time since the surgery.

I was wondering when you'd start showing off the 400 hours of labor.

I do road course racing. Sadly I do not fit in any real class. My time trial group, THSCC, lets me run in CP. There are two of us, Reserved, and I both run in CP.

Funny story how all this went down. The catalyst for all of this I blame on Dave Winter from DXD Racing Clutches.

He hooked me up a new clutch and machined my flywheel,, so we pulled the tranny. then i was like, well crap, we are this far, lets do cams, so we pulled the motor. Then with the engine bay empty, I started on the firewall and wiring.

I'm not really sure what Dave was trying to say with this statement but he said it with pink.

the new bits and pieces

installed.

I have not had a chance to take her to the track, that will happen this weekend. but the street driving I've done with her, which is limited to basically ZdayZ and driving it home from ZdayZ since we had to tow Hop's car home, the clutch has an amazing feel. You can modulate the clutch, it engages very nice, way better than my old ACT, or even the clutch master before that.

Hopefully Dave is trolling and can answer specific questions about the clutch.

We went with something new for Bryan. It's our 2700lbs 'SS' pressure plate with a full faced ceramic on the disc. The ceramic is the same material as what we use in the puck style clutches, it's simply applied differently. I tried to stay as close to stock engaging as I could, but still be able to handle to heat and abuse of tracking the car. I got the chance to drive the car at ZDAYZ and it feels great! pedal effort is firm but not overly, engagement is smooth and in the stock location. Overall a win. I have zero doubts that it will perform to his absolute satisfaction and we have added the 'full face ceramic' as an option in our clutch lineup.

PS. I do love Hobbs, and you too buddy! You two put on an amazing show, thank you very much for what you guys do!! Also, thanks to the volunteers/staff, your g/f and Graham's wife for their help with ZDAYZ. It's one of my favorite shows.

Awesome. Really cleans up the engine bay, but a ton of work! That metal is pretty thin, so I cant imagine it weighing much, but every little bit does add up. I like the way you wire tucked. That ss waterline replace the stock piping is a nice touch! Especially the way you secured it!

Did you notice any additional heat while driving?

that strut tower/intake plenum brace looks like it could put some weird stresses on the intake manifold...

nice job with the wire tuck. please elaborate a little more on the design and fabrication of the metal sheets for your strut brace that contours the plenum.

impressive.

as for the wire tuck, did you de-pin and re insert after running it the way you wanted to, or did you cut/resolder?

did you check each individual wire for continuity/impedence? if you did resolder, any noticable difference in resistance values?

Over 400 hours, how do you find the time, Bryan?

Glad to hear it's getting to the track this weekend! Have fun and be safe
