Default Need help taking this part of the steering wheel off...

I was hoping I would not have to resort to make a thread on something, of what seemed to be so simple.

I have a 2008 Base and am simply trying to take off the 2 silver pieces on the steering wheel to CF wrap them and can not for the life of me get them off. I have taken the 1 screw, on each side, that is visible from behind the wheel off, but there is another one that's actually in the steering wheel (see picture). how do i get that one off?

Also I tried to take the 2 torx bolts off on each side, and they just will not budge. They are so tight, and they are on the verge of stripping.

Should I get like an allen-wrench/phillips-head to get in that tiny space, or do I need to take the whole steering wheel off, just in order to get that one screw off?

and yes, that's my sweat running down the steering wheel. its so hot out today.

Hmmm it should just pop off upwards from the bottom...I didn't have any trouble removing it. Try removing the airbag and see if that helps...once you remove the airbag bolts don't reuse them!

airbag bolts.. are those the torx bolts that are located on each side of the steering wheel? if so, those are pretty much stripped, i have been going at them for the past hour and they finally quit on me. if those are not what you're talking about, then what bolts?

Yes those bolts....I think the airbag holds the silver part in place somwhat...

I'm at work, so I can't re-confirm how it works...when I get home I'll verify how it comes off...

Sorry I couldn't help anymore

Those are tamper proof torx screws. They are soft metal. Drill the ends of them off. Use a bit small enough to fit on the head of the torx and go to town. It's pretty easy and should only take about 30 seconds a side.

You need to take the steering wheel off in order to remove the cruise/audio control switches.

There's 2 phillips screws holding each side in place, One of the screws can only be removed when the steering wheel is out.

The Torx screws will need a ratchet with tamper proof bit to get them out easily. I wouldn't recommend a screw driver, Cause it will strip the screws badly ( talking from experience ) .
