Default need lighting help!

what is the significant difference between HID and halogen?

i understand that HID requires ballasts (300+ dollars)!!!

is this the case for halogen as well?

I am trying to do fog lamps but dont want to spend that much on lights.

i see 12v halogen lamps but they are also listed as h1, h4, 9004.. etc...

i am lost.. some one please help me.. i would like to get my fog lamps as close to the stock HID lighting as possible without ripping my pocketbook

well HIDs are more expensive then halogen. they are also a lot brighter than halogen. HIDs also look cooler when you turn them on, they do a little flicker thing.
the h1,h4, 9004 is the bulb size of the foglight (halogen). If you want have similar coloring to the stock HIDs , you can get HIDs in the 4500k rating or 5000k. or get halogens with that blue-ish tint to em. it really depends on how much you want to spend.

Well your buying foglights right?? you need the foglight itself and it should come with a bulb already in there. but if you want to match the stock HIDs, then you'll need to change the bulb to a colored (blue-ish, superwhite) bulb. the foglight may not exactly match the HIDs, i guess it depends on what color bulb you get.

i'm not sure what you mean by a "kit", but you'll need the harness, switch and wiring and stuff like that.

yeah, a halogen bulb is cheap. and will come with the foglights. I have piaa fog lights that have a blue lens and thus the light is very blue. way bluer than HID however.

the color you want is often called "extreme white" if the foglight doesnt come with a bulb of that type as it is, they are no more than 20$ to replace with one that will work.

big-al, no i havnt started the project yet, be cause I am not sure what all I need.

HID is something new to me so I didnt know that I would need things other than the housings and bulbs.

Right now I dont want to spend 300$ on an HID kit, so I am looking for a cheaper alternative that would achieve the best results possible.

I am assuming that I can go into Pepboys and just grap Halogen Hyperwhite bulbs? Plug these into the housings and supply them with 12v and they are good to go?

What would be the need for relays? I would think I could just use a switch? Really I just need to be pointed in the right direction.. but if you have what I need, i would just assume get them from you.

thanks again

well a bulb pulls alot of current. if you just stuck the switch in the line youd probably short it out. so you use a relay(are you familiar with a relay?) it acts as a switch, and is switched on by a second current line, a much much lower current line, and thats where you put your switch in...

thats really really confusing. but also you could make the second current line for the relay operate off the parking light or headlight power. no switches then.
