Default 06 door panels...can the big accent piece be recovered?

Hey all,

A simple project so I'll keep this simple...wanting to upscale my interior with 06 door panels, but really want to reupholster NOT JUST the armrest itself that your elbow rests on BUT ALSO the big strip of padded leather that runs perpendicular to arm rest and window switch covers. The part you push out on to open the door.

Does that strip of padding detach easily so an upholstery shop could easily redo it? I ask because in the past I've never examined an 06 door panel to see how customizable it is and I don't have access to one now.

I may pick up some door panels but want to be sure I can redo the leather since the leather strips need some work.

Thanks for any help, been wanting to add 06 door panels for awhile now.

Thx man! Would love some pics ...the shop I might send it to is in Europe, so I need to know if I can just the accent panel or if the whole door would have to be shipped? (way too expensive at that point), or possibly....I might have a go at it if it's feasible.

From a PM I receive my understanding is it's glued down? Anyone have theirs recovered and know how to defeat the glue without ripping the vinyl of the door panel? I imagine gentle heat and prying it off progressively but gently?

First preference is to just have someone else do the redo, but as in all things I also just prefer to understand the work being done as well so I learn and can generate ideas based on knowing the limits of how things are built. In theory anyway...in reality....I'm an idiot.

Just Google 350z door panels and click on images. Lots of people have done it. Also I have seen just that piece on ebay. Should be easy to detach

Actually have a set of door panels for sale (https://my350z.com/forum/interior/57...and-frame.html) out of an '07 ZR. After looking at both those panels, it doesn't appear that the side padding can be easily removed. I'd say you'd need to give the upholstery shop both panels to have them remove/replace the padding.

Thanks dkmura....appreciate it sincerely.

Hey...by any chance do you have the 06 driver side window switch cover I could buy? I really need one as I don't have one at all....not just a matter of one being scratched up...mine is gone completely.

If anyone out here in the Z community has info on one for a good price I'd really appreciate it!

And dkmura...any thoughts on how hard it would be sew something over the leather by hand? (like a layer of canvas or whatnot) I've got some ideas that would look pretty classy I think, but I have to overcome that padding being attached one way or another.

Thanks again

It can absolutely be done - thezstore sells the burnt orange leather covers. you can DIY or send your panels to them and they will do it.

Unfortunately, one corner of the DS switch cover almost cracked off. It could be glued together and/or covered to make it functional. Let me know if you're interested via PM and we'll make a deal.

As for sewing over that inner padded section, I have no idea. If others say it can be done, well, good luck to them. I like it the way it is and those door panels have really enhanced my '03 track model.

myork: thanks man...appreciate the link, I'd forgotten about seeing those orange panels a year ago or so. Got the will..finding the way...and you just helped me stay encouraged this can be done.

dkmura: I'd be interested in your cracked switch cover..can you PM me some pics? Thanks for making it available..hopefully we can come to a deal.

Love this forum,
