CAUTION:
Be careful not to damage the shift ****.
2. Push back the boot, remove control lever assembly mounting
bolt, and separate control lever assembly and control rod
assembly.
3. Remove console finisher. Refer to IP-12, "Removal and Installa-tion"."

there is the link to the pdf which holds the correct way to remove the shift ****. It has some nice diagrams as well!
Conceyted,
Thanks - pretty important we get that in. I didn't hear back from the admin here. It would be great to get this step added into the top of the thread.
Chris - can you tell me what version of service manual you're working from. I think it appears at the top of the page. Seems like they've made some updates.
Can anyone help?

Can one of you tell me where I can get that silver ring that goes on the outside on top of the shift boot when you're all done ? I know it comes with the car... but I don't think I have it anymore after I've had a shop switch my shift boot twice.
I only have a black plastic thing on the outside showing, which I'm guessing sits underneath this silver cover.
Someone wanna help me out ? Plz ?

ISH - up to you. Threak lock will make sure shift **** doesn't work loose and is part of the official procedure. In my case, it was tight enough to stay put and I decided to leave it out to make life easier if I do other changes.
As it happens, I subsequently changed to a Nismo shift **** so glad I left thread lock off.
slay2k - your dealer/shop lost a bit of your car? first place I'd go is back to them. Otherwise, its a Nissan part so local dealer or call up Courtesy or Performance Nissan for help.

1. Remove shift **** by wrapping a towel/cloth around stem of shift **** and using a wrench to loosen. Unscrew and remove.

The Howto on Redline and Courtesy sites was updated along while back.

Whew! Used the tsb to remove the shift **** properly. The radiator hose stopped further damage to the bottom edge of the ****. Used a black magic marker around the bottom of the **** to hide the scratches caused by trying to used a towel to remove it. Problem solved. My bright-orange boot is installed. Matching seats and steering wheel leather next!
Thank you, moderators, for the frustration and the scratches.
