Default Need help from those who installed a shift ****

I cant get the damn shift **** off...at first I thought it was working cause the shift **** started to turn..but after 30 mins off trying to get it off..i found out that the shifter was turning with the **** and so was the leather...did i damage the transmission..im so scared that i f*cked up the transmission..even the metal part of the shifter under the console started peeling...now the black coat thats on the shifter came off....here are the few questions that i would greatly appreciate if answered...
1) is my transmission F*cked up or will be in the future..because i read that to make sure that the bottom part should not move..
2)how can i get the damn shift **** off..(i went to the dealer and even the service guy couldn't take it off..
3)if the transmission is damaged..how and what should i do?
4)please help...very scared that i really messed up my car..
any comments would be greatly be appreciated...
ALL I gotta say is damn....why did i do THIS!

Leave the stock **** on for a while. If your tranny starts screwing up, take it in for warranty work...

Hmmmm, not sure about the damage part of the question but here's what I did to change mine out. Instructions were pretty good with the Nismo **** so I'm basically summarizing what I did based on those instructions. First thing was to pry up the plastic center console with a screwdriver (make sure to tape it up so you don't damage the console). Lift up the padding that surrounds the shifting rod. Wrap protection material (I used some cut up bits of an old bicycle inner tube) around the lower part of the shift shaft (this will be the clamping point to prevent it from rotating). Then get some vice grips or similar tool to clamp it down. Next protect the stock shift **** in a similar manner, wrapping protection material around the area you'll be using the tool on. Grab the shift **** with a 2nd wrench (I used a pair of large slip joint pliers) and twist it off while holding the lower shaft in place with the vice grips. Once you break torque you should be good. New shifter should twist on without the shaft rotating but you can always hold it steady with the vice grips.

Did you grab the shift rod from underneath while you were turning the **** using a second pair of grips ? You have to use 2 sets of vice grips.

I did as above. Remove plastic piece with boot, wrap vice grips with rubber or shammy and grab lower part of shaft. Use second pair of vice grips (large and curved), wrap with shammy or something to protect shift **** and grab shift ****. Hold lower set of grips to prevent turning the shaft and turn the **** counter clockwise. Thats all there is to it.
Hope you didnt damage anything. Good luck.

i did exaclty as explained in the instructions...but the thing is...when i twist the shift ****..the bottom shaft twist with it no matter how hard i clamp the lower part of the shaft..(clamped it so hard that the shaft started to shed metal pieces...

should i just go to the last resort and have the dealer take apart the whole shifter to take the shift **** off...this way they can also see if i damaged anything while twisting it..(hey or i might just have to buy a short shifter and have it installed?)

we can take it to the dealer and have them do it right? that would be soo much better imo. Has anybody had their dealer do this?

i took mine to the dealer, but they said they couldn't do it. I pretty much did what everyone is saying about lifting the boot, and wrapping the shaft with a towel. I had a friend hold the vice grips on the shifting rod while i twisted the shift ****. it was a pain, but it finally broke free.

Try using a longer wrench to remove the **** to get more torque. The pliers I used weren't the standard ones you find in generic tool sets, it was a big *** foot long pair which made it way easy to remove. Not sure what to say about the lower rod still twisting when clamped to the extreme though Perhaps trying to wrap the rod with a grippy type material?

im not sure if i have done any damage...but it seems find...actaully a little better getting in 2nd gear(without knotchiness)...but still im pretty scared that i might have dont something bad..so what i have decide to do it to buy the Rogue short shifter..this way i know that i have a brand new shift rod(undamaged, since i kinda took the black paint off the stock rod.) and this way i can have a ease of mind that i dont have a scratched up shift rod.
1)finally get the shift **** on
2)$240 for some short shifting action
But after that i will still probably be scared that i have done damage to the trans. Hopefully it wonT!
CAn someone who knows about transmissions, please answer my question above? Is may transmission F*ck?(considering that i probably have made about 8-10 revolutions..even with a rench holding the rod)thanks

the shift rod started to rotate, but like apharmdb said, try using a longer wrench...I had some huge grip on the shift rod, and a smaller one on the ****. You just have to hold it really tight

You would have to be some pretty hard forces on the rod to break it. I couldnt imagine you have done any damage at all to it.

Whenever I have taken mine off ( a few times now) I havent even clamped the rod at all. I just used an adjustable shifter with some 100 mile tape and a towell around the ****. Make sure the shifter is tight around the ****, in fact, if the shifter is already rooted don't worry about any protection just use the shifter. Yes the rod does turn a bit as the shaft has some sort of rubber damping in it to stop vibrations.

Hope this helps

As always

H

Believe me, it is very hard to break the "seal" of the **** but once you do it just spins off.

Holy Sh*t..i was starting my car today and i found that the engine takes a little longer than normal to start...it sounds like if woulda turn the key not fully(like half way type)...could this be the problem due to twisting the shifter shaft??
