The paint color match is fine...its just looking at angles you can see waves.

So I sound like I know what I'm talking about...what do I tell the body shop people when I say that I want it to be smooth looking and not wavy throughout? Is there a name for that? I don't know crap about paint.

i have that spoiler, it needed little to no prep-work prior to painting. my guess is the problem is in the way/process it was painted and not in the prepping of the spoiler. i'd take it to another shop (just to inspect) and see if they agree with you. they should tell you if it is bad or not because shops want to feel superior to other shops. then take it back to the original shop and have them redo it.

One other question...did you apply the 3M tape to the outer edge of the spoiler or inside more?

 

i applied the 3m tape just to the inside of the grooved area. so i guess more to the inside as you said.

 

the wave you've described is called "orange peel".

check out the photo below, it has major orange peel.


I was told they have to wet sand and buff the painted item 2-3 weeks after painting to remove the "orange peel"

it's usually in the clear coat and can be wet sanded and buffed.

just take it back to them and ask them to do that.

no...not orange peel. I tried taking video of it but you can't see it in pictures or video. If you move around the wing looking at it...it doesn't look smooth like the body of the car...looks like the material isn't 100% smooth...like it waves in spots...you have to see in person to know what I mean.

you can see that throughout the wing as you move around. I don't like it.

 

OHHHH, that's the quality of the wing itself.
They should have filled in all the waves or low spots before priming , painting.
the only way to fix it would be sand it down, fill in low spots , dips, etc.. and repaint it.
sad but true.
the paint shop should be responsible for that.
it's the same as painting a door with a door ding etc. It needs to be filled before hand.
usually, you can't see imperfections before priming, the imperfections usually show up AFTER priming, most times.

Mine has some noticeable unevenness in it, too. I didn't notice it at first, but now that I have it bugs me. I don't know if it got worse or was always this way. I've had mine on since early this year, maybe Feb. or so.

It isn't horrible, but just enough to bug me

 

i never noticed anything wrong with mine. maybe because it is harder to notice on white.

 

yeah...black reflects everything. I could live with it...but I know its there and it annoys me. I'm gonna have them redo it and tell them to fill the waves in or whatever they need to do...ATLEAST repaint because of 2 fingerprints...thats totally unacceptable.

 

I know what you're talking about. I have painted many bodykits. It take time and effort to prime and and fill in little spots. Most important is to sand it down smooth and nice curve. I guess your body shop did not do a good job.

 

well they also tend to charge ALOT for "prep" and if you didnt pay for it, they wont do it. in many cases(not nescessarily yours) a knockoff type peice can cost more than the real thing just in extra prep work.

 

yeah...i gotta stress to them how I don't want to see any of that crap on my body kit...especially the back bumper since its so big. I was behind a couple imports wiht body kits tonight and they looked horrendous!!!

ares..i hear you. I just thought that for a 400.00 wing...it would come out great without much prep. I'll tell them i wanted it repainted and I'll ofcourse pay for any work needed to make it nice and smooth.

 

Yeppers that is the quality of the spoiler. Needed a lil bondo (filler)

 

thanks guys. So when I call the guy back up to tell him I'm dissappointed with the paint job, i guess I tell him that he needs to fill in the waves with filler to smooth it out?

 

This is an old *** post, but i wish i read this before i got my datasystems spoiler painted. I hope it's not that bad... i'll find out on saturday
