FYI - nearly every consumer interaction based sites do this. Any sites that have advertising, any sites we as consumers comment or interact on, any sites we "shop" on. It's not necessarily 'new' but it is a good idea be it known.
There is A LOT more to this, I used to work in this industry and technically still do on the side. Sites "tracking" your habits/info/searches sounds worse than it is. The only way around it - dont use the internet.
