Default Vortech Owners: Is it possible too....

I'm thinking for some reason it should be possible to disconnect your cog belt and removing it. Just to drive the car w/o any boost. For a couple of reasons I think this could be handy.

1. For a road trip, several hundred miles w/o boosting, why put the miles on the blower
2. just added a mod or maybe you're out of tune
3. You're dropping off for service
4. You just need a refresher to see why you you added 100+hp

I can't see how doing this would pose a problem. Some concerns:

1. Serp belt could be thrown with no load
2. Car might starve with no abundance of air
3. Piggy back ecu could act up if set up to be dependant on vac/boost for timing and fuel pump control

Let me know what you guys think...

I think it may run a little rich for a few miles . Tell the ECU adjusts . You could reset the ECU when you remove it .I heard last year some one said they did it for a trip with no ill effects . You may not want to get into the gas real hard...hhhhmmm ...may not effect it at all ....thinking about it

You won't have any problems at all. If you're at all concerned about the aux fuel pump coming on unnecessarily, you can just remove the fuse located on the power cable in the area of the battery compartment.

You could also control the fuel pump based on RPM AND vacuum/boost, instead of RPM or vacuum/boost with the R4 software.

My cog belt ripped off 2 weeks ago and I ran the car NA for 2 weeks and no problems whatsoever...def. a good idea for a long trip.

Have driven mine semi-long distance (200 miles) with the cogged belt off because I had to. Didn't have any problems.

Not sure it's a good idea long term. I've done a couple long trips and have 16K+ miles on my SC and have had no issues. Biggest concern I would have for extended periods of use without the SC spinning is that your oil system is still pumping oil to the unit. I guess it just means that oil would cycle, but your parts would not be properly lubricating during the non-belted tenure and could possibly have issues when you hook it back up.

Further, my gas mileage with the SC is much better on long highway cruises. This past weekend, I averaged around 26mpg on highway trip. Pre-Vortech, my best for a long road trip was 23.5mpg

Good points. Even under vacuum, the blower clearly helps by forcing the intake through the intercooler and helping flow into the plenum even with the BOV open. This creates a more efficient intake system although the power required to turn the blower negates much of that (but not all) from a gas mileage standpoint.

Come to think of it...I parked directly next to you at the end of the meet, the silver Z. You left before me...
