The first step in building up your VQ35DE
Is blowing it up. I haven't even boosted since I got it out of storage. I was off the throttle this morning on the way to work and it went. Chunks everywhere. I've only been driving it for four days. Oh well, looks like it's time for a strong motor and a standalone.

Etx I'm sorry to hear about your motor and wish u luck on the new build. Gotta love how everybody just assumes the aps is flawless. God forbid the day 1 blows up cause then everyone will have to find a new golden cow to pray to. hehe

ETX, sorry to hear about the car....this thing wreaks of the dreaded crank angle sensor wire issue....terrible ignition timing can blow up and engine...even at idle.
If you need help with forged parts, torque plate, or an engine core, don't hesistate.

i am aware that the kit is Greddy if memory serves he was one of the first to self install as well. I was simply stating that the only reason people ask what kit was to make sure that there might aps has not yet fallen.
I am no expert, but if he blew the motor at idle then how does that support the fact that the internals are not strong enough....assuming he was under 400rhwp. If he was at idle then he was not pushing the limits of the rods.

etx, sorry for your misfortune. I'm sure it will be a beast once you get the engine rebuilt.

I asked because I'm in the market for an FI kit, and it seems like only the Greddy and ATI blow up motors for the most part. Stillen, Vortech, APS and HKS all seem safe, though I'm sure they'll all blow up some motors as well.

I think he was just pointing out in a cynical way that APS will eventually blow up some motors too. I think everyone knows that a stock motor can only take the abuse of FI for so long regardless of the type or manufacturer.
I do notice that Greddy is the leader in the blown motors category. Is it due to popularity and time since release, or is it bad? IMO it seems they leave too much up to the tuner.

No bones to pick here just simply frusterated with the bad name greddy kits are getting. In my opinion $ to $ the greddy is every bit as good of a kit as the aps. Better performance through research u say. Better quality through marketing I say. Aps has yet to make improvements on there kits they simply release posts 4 months after it came out about what it already had. Ie crank angle wire oil pan yada yada. Still a good kit just not the holy grail.

My take on it, out of the box the APS is better, but properly tuned with accomodating parts and a built motor the Greedy kit is great.

You put a standard issue greddy kit against an APS kit on a stock motor and we will see which one lasts....regardless of hp output. Greddy has no BOV, no ignition control, and no fuel solution. Why would APS have to make improvements to a kit they put a year of R&D into...they don't...that says something right there.
