Exclamation fuel tanker ol assembly whatchamacallit

so.... i took my fuel pump assembly thing out yesterday to inspect the swirl jet fix that speedlab had fabricated for me (i just wanted to make sure the hose was holding up after being submerged in gasoline)
no problem...material seems to be holding together just fine...

the o-ring that seals in the assembly, when you put the black metal plate on top and put the 6 screws in, yah that one...well, the o-ring did not fit in the groove , it was too big...maybe it streched???

so, i tried to stuff the o-ring in the groove the best that i could and tightened down the plate..and wooh, i smell like gasoline...ok...

so, today, i went to go fill up...and i noticed fuel starting pouring out from under my car as i approached a full tank--DOH!!!

so, i went back home, pulled it apart..and took of the o ring to inspect..it looked good, just too big, so i decided to consult with macguyver and figure this thing out (no, i didn't use any chewing gum)

so, i cut the o-ring, chopped out about 1/2 inch of material, and superglued it back together (yes, super glue)...the o- ring now fit in the groove perfectly, i torqued the plate back down- it fit perfectly now..and there she goes...

my question- anyone else run into the o-ring streching? being too big? hmmm?
will this quick fix be sufficient (the o ring simply is squeezed down between the groove on top of the gas tank and the black plate- not under any real stress)...or do i NEED to go buy another o-ring?--really, i think my fix will work- just wanna know from the experts out there...

THANKS GUYS

It expands when it i exposed to fuel. If you are careful you can remove the ring before lifting out the assembly and keep it dry...then it doesn't swell up. I have had my pump out 4 times already and not had to replace the ring yet from expansion. And yes I would get a new ring instead of using one that has been "repaired".
