You want to use standard, cheap oil for the breakin period. This will allow the cylinder walls and pistons to fully seat. Then, later around 2k miles you should switch to synthetic. My 2 cents.

i believe the question was reguarding whether the turbos need to be run w/ synthetic from the start...referring to the cooling effect of the oil...not the break in period for a new motor...that's what i got from the question, and i'm curious for a reply as well

Haha, you're right. My mind was thinking of forged internals breakin!

Correct.....I am curious about break-in for new turbos on an already broken in or higher mileage motor and if switching back to non-syn for awhile for the turbos is warranted or just staying with full syn which the motor has already been run on.

I just stayed with synthetic when I put my kit on at 20K miles. I don't really think the turbos need much braking in, one run and those suckers are spinning so fast any braking in is done.

turboes only need to be broken in for about 200 miles. you should use synthetic, always, because it has a higher tolerance for heat. this will prevent it from coking in your oil lines.
