Default APS kit is in! Thanks to Scott Performance

So.....after much anticipation over the past 3 weeks, I had my 350Z Roadster delivered yesterday to my house from Scott Performance in Santa Clara.

First off, I have to say that Ted, the owner, is one of those guys that simply put, knows his stuff. After checking with a few shops in the Bay Area, it was a very very tough call who to go to. I chose Scott Performance based on Ted's extensive background with Z's in addition to building/repairing exotic cars and bikes. His knowledge on how to make horsepower- the concepts and not just piecing parts, being a Unichip/APS dealer, and having a Dastek load simulating dyno for tuning closed the deal for me.

When I sat down to discuss the project with Ted, I was looking to create this roadster with no loss in streetability. This is why I decided against certain parts, such as a lightened flywheel (I've got clatter on my other track car). I was also looking for reliable horsepower with the motor as well as the tranny. I know there's a lot of options for beefing up the motor, but a lot less on trannies.

I got to drive it around for a little bit since last night, and all I can say is this thing is a monster. The kit is very streetable, albeit running pig rich. Boost starts building down low, and with these cams, 5K takes it up another notch. I'm hoping to get some further tuning on it, and see if it makes even more hp running leaner. If you have never been in a force induced Z, I highly recommend you find the means. Seriously, if this thing is as reliable as it's set out to be, it's a relative bargain compared to a similar factory sports car with anything close to this horsepower.

Will post some pics of the Z completed, as I'm still waiting on some other parts, including the Stoptech's (rear brackets are backordered until the 14th) :T

Anyhow, a brief rundown of the power parts include:
APS twin turbo, 91 octane programming
Custom SP true dual 2.5" Exhaust
Delong/SP Cams
RT cats
Add'l peripherals included a Koyo radiator and JWT clutch.

I'll let the dyno numbers speak for themselves....

Damn! Is that 462 to the wheels? Are you hitting 9-10 psi due to the test pipes, or is the map for 91 limiting boost etc?

If you dont mind, what does the scott performance exhaust cost? Being in Nor cal and having that shop around is a plus. Did they do the uni chip tuning for 91?

Congrats, post some pics ;0

It's hard to see that dyno sheet after you click on it. What are your numbers? Sounds like you will have some real fun with your car! I sure hope these APS kits turn out to be as reliable as we all hope! So far it seems there are many happy owners. I have not heard of anyone so far being disappointed. I will really be interested to see how well the tuning goes with Ted's new dyno.
Did you do any internal mods?

Thanks and go represent our Z with that monster

Yep, it's 462 at the wheels right now. As for the programming, it's pretty much the 91 octane program from APS with a little tweaking, but using random tech cats and believe it or not, stock internals. I'll have to double check (guages aren't in), but I'm pretty sure the boost is nothing above 8.5psi. The right piping/exhaust and proper cams can go a long way in maximizing the potential of this kit, as can be seen by a few Z's already equipped. Right now, the programming is a bit rich at idle and cruising, as the ECU is adapting/learning per Ted. Once I get a few hundred miles on it to break in the cams and clutch, I'm gonna take it back for an oil change, get my stoptech's on, and some more tuning/tweaking.

As for the exhaust, it's probably gonna run around $1000 give or take what you do/want with it. My exhaust actually exits in the middle with dual tips off a lambo diablo 6.0. Very trick, and the sound is something pictures won't do justice with. Ted uses the flow dynamics he learned off building exhausts for Ferrari F355's (3.5 V8 vs. Z's 3.5 V6). Will definitely post pics of that in the near future.

What are the cam specs?
Very interesting results. Wish the plot included boost and AFR.

For the cams, don't quote me on this, but it's somewhat similar to a JWT grind as far as lift with modified duration specs.

As for boost and AFR, I wasn't as concerned at this breakin stage (I know Ted's got the data but I don't), but was a little surprised myself at the initial power results. I know that the goal is around 7.5-8.5psi, and 12-12.5:1 A/F max at WOT. By my sniffometer and the consequential dizzying smell of gas, I'd guesstimate it's currently more like 10:1, maybe richer. Well, at least the cats are metal, but I'm sure they're running toasty right now.

How does the JWT clutch compare to stock? Increased noise?

You'll at least want your AFR closer to 11:1 after 5K. I wouldn't go above 12:1 anywhere in the RPM range.

Please see if you can get those cam specs from your shop for everyone.

Hi Will/Under Pressure...are you familiar with this dyno? How do the numbers compare to a dynojet or Dyno Dynamics load based dyno.

A/F chart would be great too...if you can get that posted..nice work...bet is a blast to drive.

If you are running in the low 10's or richer, carefuls....I would get that leaned out fast....too rich a mixture can wash out rings.

Congrats on the twin turbo install my friend and well done to Ted from Scott Performance, he is a very knowledgeable guy and his customer service is also first class.

I'm a bit confused, as the dyno says (B.H.P) in bolt lettering above the graph. Like GQ asked, how does this compare to a Dynojet? I'd be less skeptical if I saw this car run on a Dynojet that has dynod other FI'd 350z's. Of course we know that you can get whatever numbers you want out of a dyno based on operator preferences.

The APS TT is an awesome kit and all, but I really find it hard to believe you are putting down those kinds of numbers at 8.5psi. And even if the kit IS APS, I'd be so worried about blowing my stock motor at that point that I'd rarely get on it.

I don't find it hard to believe. Im Tuned at 8.5psi and make 440whp 91Oct. on a Dynojet and my car is detuned. I'll see if I can find a dynochart. But cams with this APS kit makes the car rip and it sounds so effortless.

Indeed. Very impressive, although I'd still like to see what he puts down on a dynojet so we can get a relative comparison to others.

Grats on the install though, I'm sure it pulls HARD.
