My APS built motor thread
Just in case anyone is interested, I'm going to post here to talk about anything related to my motor project, and to post pics of my progress.
As some of you have already read, I've run into some engine problems with my turbo kit installed, most likely due to overheating, so I decided to go ***** out and built the entire motor up.
Here's a list of everything my car will have when it's all said and done:
APS Twin Turbo
10lb Wastegate Actuators
Arias Extreme Duty Pistons 9:0
Pauter Rods
ARP Main/Head Studs
Port/Polish Heads w/ full valve job
JWT Cams and Springs
Crawford Cast Plenum
Greddy EVO2 Exhaust
Ultimate Racing Test Pipes
CJM Return Fuel System
RC 650cc Injectors
ATS Twin Carbon Disc Clutch
Defi Boost Gauge
Defi EGT Gauge
AEM Wideband AFR
Koyo Radiator
Greddy Catch Can
550-575whp

So I have a new engine comming (nothing blown mind you ... just wanted to build and drive at the same time.
I have a totally stock Roadster excpt for CF nose/hood/front side fenders/tail/and trunklid (working on building a hardtop for those that are interested ..... carbon fiber first ... maybe something else later) (ok actually fiberglass first to get it right but that one will never see the light of day [ CF prototypers know what i am talking about ] )
We have been working on getting someone up here that knows what they are doing (seattle, WA) so far no one yet:
I have hooked up with a guy who knows about this stuff ... and i have some paper that says i know engineering stuff (not that i really do ...)
Here is my question ... request
can soemone define for me what each of those parts do?
APS Twin Turbo - ok know that one
10lb Wastegate Actuators - thats a BOV right ?
Arias Extreme Duty Pistons 9:0
Pauter Rods
ARP Main/Head Studs
Port/Polish Heads w/ full valve job - where how and what does this do for ya ?
JWT Cams and Springs
Crawford Cast Plenum - why not the APS spacer ?
Greddy EVO2 Exhaust - ok i know that too
Ultimate Racing Test Pipes - for cutting out the cat yes ?
CJM Return Fuel System - fuel good i know
RC 650cc Injectors - ditto
ATS Twin Carbon Disc Clutch - no LSD as well ?
Defi Boost Gauge - pretty stuff
Defi EGT Gauge - more pretty stuff
AEM Wideband AFR - and again
Koyo Radiator - figurred that one out
Greddy Catch Can

APS Twin Turbo - ok know that one
10lb Wastegate Actuators - thats a BOV right ? ( APS uses external actuators to control the boost level that the turbo's supply to the intake of the engine. The stock APS actuators will only allow boost to approx 10-11 lbs of boost. If you want to boost past that then an actuator upgrade is required. Blow off valve releases boost when the throttle body shuts when you back off the throttle. Helps prevent compressor surge and turbo impeller damage.)
Arias Extreme Duty Pistons 9:0 ( Heavy duty Arias forged pistons with thicker ring lands to prevent damage and more safety under boost. 9.0:1 is the compression ration of the piston)
Pauter Rods ( heavy duty application for replacement of stock connecting rods)
ARP Main/Head Studs ( high tensile strength fastners to replace stock head bolts and main crankshaft bolts. Allow for higher boost safety against blown headgaskets)
Port/Polish Heads w/ full valve job - ( Improves air flow in and exhaust flow out of the combustion chambers. Allows for quicker exhaust movement and quicker turbo spool up times...meaning you get boost faster.)
JWT Cams and Springs ( Jim Wolf Technology camshafts and valve springs that allow for higher rpm's and better power output over the stock camshafts)
Crawford Cast Plenum - (A new version of their excellent concept which has been copied by many others. Allows more even air floe to each cylinder in the engine)
Greddy EVO2 Exhaust - ok i know that too
Ultimate Racing Test Pipes - ( Yes..removsl of stock catalytic converters..less exaust restriction)
CJM Return Fuel System - fuel good i know
RC 650cc Injectors - ditto
ATS Twin Carbon Disc Clutch - ( excellent clutch....several LSD's available too choose from. Good idea to upgrade from stock unit when going F/I)
Defi Boost Gauge - pretty stuff
Defi EGT Gauge - more pretty stuff
AEM Wideband AFR - and again
Koyo Radiator - figurred that one out
Greddy Catch Can ( Helps prevent oil and gases from the crankcase from re-entering the intake tube)
Hope that helps a little.

ccartwright,
I will have a AEM wideband for sale very shortly. Since I am going with the HKS Vpro and the A/F knock amp I won't need the AEM any more. I used the AEM for 1 month. Let me know if you are interested. It has a black face with black bezel.

yeah .... probibly should not have called it pretty stuff... no insult intended ... but gauges and what not are something i need to consider later as for now my biggest concern is the engine build up ....
But this doea bring up a question ....
Why is is good to know what you exshaust temps are .... i mean why would this be important to know on a regualr basis ?

Actually, I have 6 EGT's, each one plumbed directly into the exhaust ports.
Kidding. No..just one EGT.Two widebands, one per bank, is admittedly a bit overkill, but I feel better knowing that one side isnt running leaner than the other...for instance...if an injectors starts to malfunction.
Here is a pic I took at home.

Does anyone know off the top of their head how much the TS reflash for raising the rev limiter to 7100 and disabling the top speed limiter costs? Also, since I'm getting cams and headwork, should I consider raising the idle while they're at it?

$395...I need to triple check the pricing...but its the same price that TS and AAM charge for theirs, and we sell the reflashed ECU's too.
Call me..I just havent added it to the website. We also offer free return ground shipping as well. With the cam, you should definately raise your idle to 1000rpm, to avoid stalling issues.
