Default How rich is too rich?

Wondering what A/F ratio is considered "detrimental" to an engine? I might need to drive my car for a few days with the A/F in the 9's in certain RPM ranges until a solution can be applied, but I don't want to harm the car. Any input appreciated.

i had a similar discussion/ question for my guy here...the consensus (not based off any concrete data) is that below 10:1...getting into the 9's... is territory for cylinder wash

oh lord....if that were only true

there is more to "detrimental" than just an AFR

many man many stock cars run AFR's in the 9's

if the motor can't rev, it's too rich

that being said, in the 15 years I ahve been modding cars, from turbo to NA, I have never, not once seen a bore washed cylinder

So is it safe to assume that for now, I'm ok at 9.0:1 until we can get a solution in place to raise it? I'm not talking about taking it out to the track or anything, just around town type driving. I know that timing is being appropriately adjusted, is there anything else I should be concerned about?

9.0:1 ?
Um... be sure to change the oil afterwards.

In modern engines it is very difficult to score the cylinder bore itself from too much fuel. The more likely damage will be from fuel contaminating the oil leading to, mostly likey, a rod bearng being destroyed. I have seen this happen before.

Is there no way to adjust the baseline feul pressure on your car? I thought you had AAM's rails and reg installed, or you still rockin' the stock fuel system?

That explains the problem right there. haha
You could always add Tolulene or Methanol to the fuel to lean things out a bit. Wouldn't hurt in the power output department either.

Hopefully you'll get everything worked out soon, good luck.

Can you name a few modern cars that run 9's from the factory? And I am not talking about racing muscle cars.

I assume you are refering to gasoline based motors?

My VQ bogs at precisely 9.0:1 A/F ratio...and feels really nasty and sluggish anywhere in the 9's.

Kelly, if you have one or two brief spots of 9:1 A/F, I wouldnt worry about it. The engine sees very little time at WOT, when compared to part throttle operation.

Cool, thanks Sharif. I'll keep out of it until this gets resolved.
