Default Driving F/I

I have a couple questions on how to drive F/I correctly so as to save my engine from having windows.

1. What are the effects of downshifting to higher RPM's constantly? Must it be sequentially? Can I go from 6th gear to 3rd? Long term effects of constantly doing so sequentially and jumping from gear to gear?

2. a) Misshifting. Say I go from 5th redline to 4th? Bad for what? The snail? The engine?

b) Say I go from 1st to 4th... or worst case 6th? What are the maleffects of that?

3. Revlimiter. What happens if I hit the fuel cut off point? Will the damage be for the tubo/engine? Where does boost go when you hit that point?

These are some questions I have now, more to come later!

I've done all of the above except going from 5th redline to 4th. I did that once when I was NA and that was the last.

As for going from 6th to 3rd there is no effect but i always try to rev match so its not such a strain.

Going from 1st to 4th nothing happens except for a bog.

Hitting the rev limiter does nothing but makes the car backfire. So when i go to the track and hit the rev limiter when drag racing it gives a nice pop! I now have about 13,000 miles on the turbo kit. 41200 total.

why/how could anybody ever switch into 4th by accident when meaning to go into 6th?

not meaning to be an a$$, just wondering..this would take some effort

I probably should of read this better. Yeah, how could you go from 5th to 4th? 6th is right straight down. Oh well i guess im no better, I've shifted from 4th to 3rd while n/a.

After the turbo Ive gone from 2nd to 5th instead of going into 3rd. Get to excited sometimes.

Just a hypothetical question.

I've shifted from 3rd to second by accident on my first Z.. All I know is she didn't like it.. Rev counter went bonkers and my back broke lose... this is on the highway and NOT fun. Luckily I wasn't jumping off the clutch fast so my foot was on the pedal when the car went bonkers. So I kicked my foot in and everything was ok. I think if I had not put the clutch in again fast I could have twisted the drive shaft or screwed the engine. I dunno if there was any damage done, as that was my first Z and I'm on my second. But I drove that one for about a month and a half after that misshift and it didn't seem to have suffered. With a Turbo, I dunno I'd think that the jumping revs and peak boost/boost spike could blow the rods.

I must sheepishly admit that I have done the 5th to 3rd mis-shift in my car. I had the car about 4 or 5 months, and was still N/A. I was playing with a Mustang, and just got a little excited and mis-shifted. It's easy if you're shifting hard. Got the clutch out far enough that the tires actually slid on the pavement as the engine tried to slow them down. No harm done though. Car still runs like a champ. I have since changed the shift **** to a Nismo variant and haven't mis-shifted since. I don't like the stock **** at all.

once i did a really cool 3rd gear at 7000rpm into 2nd and immediatly let off the clutch compeltely. I was racing a friend on the tollway. The highest I saw the rpms go was 9000, it may have gone a little higher... im assuming it did since I dont recall the tires letting go and i had the ATS twin disk completely engaged and I doubt it was slipping any.

Thank goodness for pauter rods, and a 100% ferrea valvetrain! The solid lifter valvetrain design is rock solid... our VQ cylinder heads are of the same design of most motorcycle cylinder heads. The difference being the specs on the actual components themselves... do a complete Ferrea cylinder head and you really dont have to worry about RPM maxing out your cylinder heads from breif spikes of extreme RPM. The block has a very good rod/stroke ratio and I dont think I woudl even worry much about that if you have very good rods and wrist pins. The thing I would probably worry about the most is the oil pump.

If you have a stock engine, a mishift into a lower gear that is allowed to fully engage would probably destroy the engine.
