It's been long enough that some of the early Z's are needing smog tests here in CA; I'm wondering if anyone with FI has done so? I know that many kits are automatic fails (visual), but a couple are/might be certified.

And if you have passed, what were the numbers?

Not being able to pass smog would pretty much kill any future plans in this department.

 

Unless you have a hook you are fugged! Vortech and Stillen SCers are the only ones that will pass!

 

I don't think it's time yet. Even the earliest 350Z's will not need to be smogged until 2007.

 

Actually its 2008 or 2009 for the 1st smog according to the way I interpreted someones post from DMV.

It stated that if the vehicle was a 2002 model or newer, smog will only be required after 6 yrs and will be done every 3 after that or something.

Even still we have 2 more yrs for Carb OE #'s.

It is every 6 years for new cars. And after 4 years if change of ownership.

no time for me! i have #42, 03 350, and my tags are up in one month. i currently live in a deq area. if i do not pass, luckily the county about 7 miles away is exempt from deq. so i just put in an address change but have all my mail sent to my "office", lol. when i first got the car they didn't even do a visual inspection, just plugged the car in and said here ya go. not sure what they might do seeing the intercooler up front when driving in.

Even though my car does not need a smog for a long time, my buddy owns a smog shop so last week I took it over there and just smogged it to see what would happen. The car past with no issues whatsoever.
I have a Vortech SC with a 3.12 pulley and cams just if anyone was curious.

 

Ehat kind of #'s did you end up with the cams?

 

With cams and tuning and other little changes, I am at 407whp and 325trq, I am considering the T-trim and go from there....just following in Boogers footsteps

 

Just an FYI, that all of the FI cars should easily pass the sniffer emissions test, as long as the cats are installed. The issues is the visual checks, and power adders. Without a CARB EO#, once the inspector pops the hood, you will fail the test right away. Even an aftermarket airfilter or CAI needs a CARB EO# in order to pass the visual smog checks.

 

Very true, especially in Cali. one and only reason why I chose what I did, otherwise I would have gone the TT route.

I'm not concerned about a smog check in 6 years, I'm concerned about some cop pulling me over, forcing me to open the hood (which they now can if you have any form of what THEY believe to be an aftermarket part...even a sticker...) and then sending me to a referree...which then in return will not see a CARB sticker and it'll be time for me to move out of state...I've so had it with California...
That's one main reason that other than my wheels I have not changed anything visually on my car...perfect sleeper. Good thing with the APS kit is also that it pretty much looks like stock.

 

absolutely...up until 5 yrs ago...Georgia didn't even have a inspection.....They had cars on the road with no hoods...some no fenders...cops just let roll right by (This was north west near chattanooga). It was inspiring ....its was like build what you want.
