Does DETONATING always happen or it shouldnt at all

Ok guys I have had my car back from the the shop for a couple days now and I decided to try out the tuner pro by plugging in my headphones to hear for detonation and gues what there it was. Without the headphones I try and I try but I cant hear any detonation. Does the tuner pro just pick up very minimal detonation and I shouldnt be worried about it or is there supposed to be absolutely none at all?

I hope and believe others will chime in here. I am far from an expert but do have an F.I. 350z so this is of interest to me as well.
Detonation should not be happening in your car. A solid tune is supposed to eliminate any detonation is my understanding. Detonation damages your motor at the very least until it destroys it outright. Depending on how severe the detonation- failure can happen instantaneously or damage your internals until they let go over time.
Detonation has been described as sounding as if your hearing gravel being shaken in a coffee can. I wish I could hear actual detonation so I could know for sure....but not in my car
If I was you I would run some 100 octane fuel until you can get to a dyno to see what exactly is going on with your tune. It could be a bad tank of gas but being that you just got your car back from instll you need to follow up on this. Did the installer dyno your car after install? Lastly...there is a thread concerning detonation and the TN kit. These people might be able to give you general or specific info about your situation as well.

Try the race gas and see if you still detect the detonation. Not that A/F ratio is the only determinate for tuning but what is it through the RPM band? Post up the dyno sheet so people with more experience can give you imput. I'd hate to see you damage your car so soon after the fun should begin. I hope some installers here can give you imput on possible install issues that might be at play.

If you have a utec it should work well at at hearing detonation and pull back your timing. As stated before you may be hearing engine noise. The utec data logs you or your tuner should be able to see whats going on.
At what RPM's is it knocking? The dangerous areas are load areas around 3500-5000, if you are hearing knock past that it is probably engine noise. Also when tuning it on the dyno you will hear less noise since you remove road noise up front specially.
there should be 0 knock whatsoever.

You can also adjust the sensitivity of the knock sensor, as well as how much timing it yanks out when knock is detected. Knock although an actual event the interpretation is subjective, because if you want no knock at all you will have to set the sensitivity of the knock signal to the max and in the Utec set the knock count to 0 and you will probably be tuning all day and once you get on the road it will probably sense knocking due to the sensitivity.
correct....what you are striving for are next to no knock events in the log, or events so minimal, they bare register (ie on my car I get an occassional 1 count, but no even significant enough for timing to be pulled (I use the default utec settings for sensitivity) )

From what I read I don't think he is hearing detonation, he is basically asking a question.
Truthfully, yes it happens. As engines make more torque they are always running closer to the edge of detonation. With more torque you increase cylinder pressure, increasing cylinder pressures increases heat, increasing heat will in turn push you closer to the threshold of knock. You ultimately want to tune so that it happens as least as possible. If you can't hear the detonation assuming you have an idea what it sounds like, then no worries.
