Default VORTECH GONE BAD!!!need help

so i was driving in newport beach, not even hauling or anything, just cruising........i started to hear a noise, but only when i would turn, well slow down i guess. the noise wasnt constant but out of nowhere it started being constant enough for me to pop open the hood and take a look. i noticed the crackling grinding sound was coming from the supercharger unit and when it would gring, it would make the unit shake a little, before i knew it i didnt hear the vacuum sound anymore. dead silence, my car is running great(stock). the vortech is disabled. any ideas before i get it to the shop, i am socal by the way....any recommendation on what shop to take it too so they dismantle my piece of s***

any similiar experiences out there???
thanks

oooooooh. i also noticed dust like particles that seemed to be grinded metal....key info

Hmmm.....the grinded metal doesnt sound too great! Im not sure if they worked with the Vortech unit itself but GT Motorsports in Rancho Cucamonga is the best place I have ever seen for F/I. If you do go there ask for SAM the owner. He is a standup guy. I learned about him from Shariff and I owe Shariff a lot for recommending him to me. He does magic with our cars. It is a bit of a drive to Rancho Cucamonga but well worth it. If you like here is their number:

909-989-2278

My car is there right now, as a matter of fact, doing some upgrades to my twin turbo kit. You should stop to check out their facilities Im sure you will be happy.Tell him George, the pilot, sent you.

Have you checked Cog Belt? Don't know how many miles, but if you have been running the belt too loose, you might be missing some cogs on the belt.

Where is this dust ? Is it black ? Do you have a boost gauge ? do you have a A/F gauge ? What do they read when you get on it ?

Sorry but if your going to add some thing to your car like a SC or Turbo . You need to get to know that system to some degree as to know when and where some thing is going wrong .

Turn the car on . Look to see if both pulleys on the jack shaft are turning . Then look to see if you pulley on the blower is turning . Either way...get it to a shop as soon as possible , and I wouldnt drive it till you get it to a shop

The bolt holding the cog pulley on the s/c might have broken causing it to rattle everywhere. It happened on my unit once while I owned it and once to the person I sold it to. It might be related to tightening the belt too much? It's tempting to do because the tighter it is the less noisy that unit gets.

You need to give additional clues..Any pulleys wobbling like out of round or bearings loose on pulleys? Maybe a pulley bearing went (metal dust) What did you have to do to bring it back to NA?

i didnt have to do anything to make it n/a, i was driving it and out of nowhere i heard no noise once it gave, just dead silence, sounds and feels like n/a, theres absolutely no noise coming from the supercharger, the dust it just regular and just sitting around the engine bay, like no black but there are little flakes of metal, another thing is that when i was able to take a look at it before its stopped, it was making a grinding noise from supercharger itself and it would shift a bit as the noise got louder. i tried moving it with my hands and i had no luck so when i would see it shake a little i new that it was inside the supercharger.

You need to take the cog belt off , if it already hasnt come off . Take it to the shop that did the install . Let them figure it out . If it is the blower , it should be replaced by Vortech for free . Have the shop call them .

"cog belt ripped off"? Do you know what the underside of the Cog belt looks like "new"? Are there any cogs missing on the inside of the cog belt? You might not of had the belt tight enough. Thus the cog belt was slipping. Jumping between cogs on the two cog pullies and finally ripped off on the cogs and got down to the metal strands within the belt and eventually "ripped off".

Sounds like all you need to do is put a new cog belt on and make sure it's tensioned properly..

+1 Vortech is VERY vague on proper tension. Had a similar problem and was finally told by Jamie at Vortech Tech Support, that the TP should be tightened to where the COG belt can only be twisted 1/4" max. This should be adjusted while cold and LocTite applied to the threads of the bolt/nut.
