A rectangular air box isn't made for efficiency it’s made for ease of fabrication.
The rectangular air box example was merely an illustation of a sheet metal intake. Forced induction does not require a larege plenum since the runners are obviously pressurized. Efficiency in a forced induction intake is more dictated by runner diameter than shape of the plenum.
With FI the shorter most direct route wins every time.

i seen one at bw a couple of weeks ago. the guy said it was a prototype. im not sure who made it but he said it improved acceleration and throttle responce with no flat spots. if anyone knows about it let me know. does anyone know the benifits of the wilson plenum
Forced induction does not require a larege plenum since the runners are obviously pressurized.
Plenum displacement is extremely important to get right in any application. Inadequate displacement and plenum shape causes uneven air distribution into the cylinders. Just because the plenum is under pressure does not hide these flaws. NA or FI, there is a pressure transfer taking place, uneven transfer will cause individual cylinder tuning issues. Also, the plenum is often referred to as a surge tank; because it is an air surge tank of course. Larger displacement will stabalize pressure in the manifold increasing air transfer into the cylinders, as the pressure drop (that takes place every time a set of valves open) inside the plenum will be reduced due to the more plentiful volume of available air.
Runner shape and volume is where most of the tuning is done, yes, however that tuning goes out the window if you dont have plenum displacement and shape to support it.
Jet ---so many factors as Tech said, That one you illustrated, is off a small Block Ford I believe but, no matter. Flow characteristics are what it's all about and there would have to be a lot of time involved in making inexpensive prototypes to test on a Flow machine, By rights, set up for your individual requirements, (CFM/RPM, Velositys,Fuel/Air Paths@different RPMs)

Hmm. What would be even cooler if each runner had a velocity stack. I plan on fab'in a custom plenum for myself someday. Just need to take a welding class of some sort and I'll be on my way

to each his own, but it's (SFR's) by No means ugly ...
you don't need to 'adapt' the twin throttle bodies into your setup, so no big changes needed, ... you can buy the single throttle body design...i have it on my car atm... going back to stock...wanna buy it?
