Turbonetics oil seal/smoke issue official fix thread
All,
I just got off the phone with Reggie again from Turbonetics. Here's the deal he laid out to me:
*****YOU MUST PM REGGIE FOR THIS******
Reggie has mentioned this repeatedly to me. Please do not call Turbonetics asking about this. Regardless which of the two categories you fall into below send a pm to him on this board. His username is blk180sx PMing him is the only way to get this done as of today.
If your turbo is currently failed (smoking, leaking oil, etc) regardless of warranty status Turbonetics will rebuild the unit at their cost and when rebuilt the turbo will have a wet bearing section installed. The cost of the rebuild and wet bearing housing is on Turbonetics. This will also require water lines and fittings. More on this in a minute
If your turbo is not currently failed (running without issues) regardless of warranty status Turbonetics will make an effort to get the turbo rebuilt with a wet bearing section on a case by case basis. Keep in mind that those with failed units need replacement units immediately but Turbonetics is not hanging the non-failed ones out to dry. They just need to make sure they take care of the failed ones first
Water lines: Obviously to use the water cooling portion of the bearing section you need fittings and water lines. Turbonetics turbos (like PE turbos) don't require you to have the unit water cooled even though its a wet bearing unit. It will still run fine without water and uses the oil as a dry bearing would. In any case Turbonetics will provide their water lines and fittings at a cost of $100 for both SS braided water lines, tee fittings, banjo bolts, and washers. This can be purchased directly from Turbonetics at the same time the arraingments are being made for the turbo rebuild. If the end user would prefer to purchase and implement their own water cooling lines, fittings, and set up they are free to do so with no additional cost incurred. Additionally if the end user would prefer to wait and add the water cooling later this is fine as well as the turbo will operate normally as discussed before.
To recap all this:
Failed turbo: (regardless of warranty status) Unit rebuilt with water cooled bearing section FREE OF CHARGE
Non-Failed turbo: (regardless of warranty status) Units rebuilt with water cooled bearing section on a case by case basis with priority going to failed units
Water cooling lines and fittings: $100 from Turbonetics or your cost for whatever parts you choose to use
I would personally like to thank Reggie and Turbonetics for offering this service to the Turbonetics customers. A typical turbo rebuild is in the $800 range and I think its very stand up of them to offer this free of charge to correct any current customer issues out there. Aside from the relatively small cost of the water lines if you purchase them from Turbonetics this is an excellent way to take care of their customers at next to no cost.

Well, you know more question were to come. My kit is fairly new. Only 1800 miles on it. No problems. Of course I'd like to sit on this and let the others get there Turbo's fixed first, since mine's fine.
Question is, how long will this offer stand for? Is this suppose to be a sure fix or a better solution? For I'd be very interested in the future after things settle down. For there doors will probably be swamped first thing.

Thanks for the condescending remark, you've really added value to this forum and thread. I'm sure all the people on here will appreciate you sh1tting all over yet another thread.
But anyway, it wasn't ignored for so long. The one issue that has been at the forefront on this forum was an install issue (fact). That individual hasn't decided to come forth and tell the community what was the real issue, and probably never will.

grrr..I see this thread going downhill fast . Can't we all just be nice, and appreciate that a manufacturer is actually offering a fix??? People have had some kind of issue with just about every kit out there.....but few manufacturers ever make changes and updates to their kits, to make them better...hats off to TN.

This website needs better (active) moderation.

One more question. Does this mean that new/future TN kits will have this water cooled center section included?
