Default name that vortech issue/sound....

God damnit, 700 miles and already running into issues.

Was cruising when all of a sudden i hear a noise similar to rocks in a metal can. It then sounded like metal rattling or metal on metal rattling.

I pull over and pop the hood. The blower sounds real bad btw 500-2500 rpms. Sounds is a high pitched, with a whirrr whirr frequency. Used my ear and it sounded like the noise is coming from the jackshaft pulley assembly (6 rib pulley on one side and cog on the other)

The audible change noticable at all rpms and under load. It just sounds a bit louder and higher pitched then before.

Going to try to get video up, need a place to host it.

What im going to try is to disconnect the blower cog belt and see if i still get the noise. Irony is, i just got my vortech warranty letter in today.

videos are being reloaded to youtube! be patient

chris, if you need a place to host the vid, let me know... i'll upload it to my webserver...

also, i would pull the filter off of the blower and make certain that the compressor wheel is not rubbing on the housing of the blower... but, usually, the "rocks in a blender" sound stems from gearing... it has a bit of play and what you hear is gear backlash...

Check your COG tensioner pulley... If it is too tight then you will rattle alot and put to much tension on the bearings.

Also check the bolt to make sure it is installed right:

Take a look at this.

getting vids off the camera now. Definitely need a host jeremey, can i email them to you?

Took the cog tensioner off and the cog belt off and the sound went away. Put it back on and the sound is back. Cog tensioner bolt is on right, im a **** for that .

Its got to be coming from the jackshaft assembly.

How loose should the cog belt be? I have it where you can rotate the belt a fair amount. The Nut on the tensioner shows about 1/4" left in the adjustment slot( bolt is probabably 1/2" from the bottom of the slot).

and for getting the air filter off, thats at least a 1hr job. Not to mention putting it back on.

Can i drive with the cog belt off? It seemed to run about 14.5-13.5 under mild throttle, no load.

An hour to get the air filter off?..... How so?.... I can get mine off in about 5 mins... Turn your wheel to the right all the way, undo the 3 plastic clips to free your fender liner.. loosen the bracket holding the filter onto the SC and then pull it from below thru the wheel well.

if you're certain that the noise is in the jackshaft assembly, don't worry with pulling the air filter... the whirring noise is what made me think that the compressor fan might be touching the fan housing... there is a lot of force pulling on the jackshaft...

and yes, you can drive with the cog belt off... you'll just be N/A, of course... *haha* honestly, i'll wager you have normal noise... most likely it's gearlash...

i'll pm you my email address...

o nice! thought i had to pull the bracket off again.

Jeremy, its not a normal noise, its a new noise as of today. I understood the rough sound at idle and normally would keep the ac on just to have the idle up a bit. I think its bearing failure in the jackshaft.

Ill be na! what! So the car will run fine? Ill miss the damn turbine noise though!!!

Yeah, i looked at the turbine blades before i installed it. Definitely a close fit. So, this is covered under vortech warranty right? What all will i have to do?

yes, the car will run fine... with your UTEC, it will run a bit rich if you go WOT, but outside of that, you'll be all set...

as far as warranty, most likely vortech will want you to return the blower...

btw, still no email yet...

EDIT: email arrived... vids will be posted momentarily...

But what if it has nothing to do with the blower?

running rich isnt bad. only commute like 16 miles a day anyway. all speeds under 50mph. My baby hasnt seen much boost anyway.

Look at those pics again above of that bolt on the CoG tensioner.... I freeze framed on it in your 2nd vid and it does look like it is on backwards to me.

100% sure its on right.

Bolt, pulley, spacer1 spacer 2, bracket, washer, nut. I read the instructions thoroughly and even warned a few others about having the bolt backwards. If you look again you can see the thread coming out of the nut.

Have you tried the stetescope method to try to isolate the location? Small diameter but long metal rod to your ear and on the culprit will tell location. Good luck

sound goes from a chatter to a whine/whirr undle normal driving. Also, bracket seems to have a vibration to it.
