Default FI issues...

I installed 550cc injectors, Walbro fuel pump, and a Utec on my 350z. On the initial fire up it started up fine and was idling perfectly fine. So I go to take it around the block to see how it drives. It just died when I came to a stop. Now whenever I start it, it starts for a couple of seconds but dies, or wants to die. It struggles to stay on. Any ideas on what the problem might be?

Sorry, that's not much information

Is this the first time installing all of these parts? What F/I kit are you running?

What are your settings on the UTEC?

the pump installed correctly? is the float freely moving? my guess is that the float is stuck. i had the same problem on my old 300zxtt when i did the same upgrades as you.

I'm running the vortech supercharger w/ 9lb pulley. The Utec has the turbonetics map w/ 550cc injectors. This is the 2nd time I've done the fuel pump. But other than that, everything else was new to me.

vortech is not a turbonetics kit... maybe take it in for a custom tune

It's the base map. No matter what you have that map running for. it's not gonna run right. It's set for turbonetics not what you have. So thats whats messing it up. You know you set it like that so it can get to a tune shop. So you needa deal with it dieing till it gets a tune. Its obviously its either not getting fuel or air. And its cause of the tune. nothin else. Deal with it dieing till you get to the tune shop and watch you problem fix....

I cant get it to the shop if it barely runs. I mean barely. It won't even rev up.

Have you reflashed your ECU? If the stock ECU is still thinking your injectors are stock than it ain't gonna idle worth a damn. The UTEC won't kick in until you get some rev's on it if you have the 0% column correctly set. (EDIT: oops, I forget about speed density vs. MAF 'switch', disregard the above).

You should be able to keep it running (pig-rich) with throttle-blipping but it ain't gonna be pretty.

Might be time to get the Osiris reflash. At least they can get the car to idle until you can get it to the tuner.

I think you guys are a bit off on your "base map" logic. The base map should work to scale for the injectors. With the map sensor hooked up, he shouldnt ever see boost or leave the 0% column right? I limped my vortech with 440cc injectors on a greddy 8psi map all the way to forged and it ran fine.

Everybodywildou, did you update the map and all the paramaters? Using the map for speed density not the maf right? Maybe try a different map.

When you turn the key, you hear the pump come on right? that buzzing whir noise should indicate that its working.

Data log when its on, do you have a wideband?

Well, I would suggest reading the UTEC manual - it really has some great information. Spend a few hours reading that, and you should realize why the TN tune just isn't cutting it. Then you should actually be able to make some changes yourself.

Well, looking at the params for the TN 550 tune, you will NEED to stay below 60% throttle. Still looking at it...

And it looks like the Injector scaling params aren't even entered (in bold)??? I must be missing something here. But if that's the case, you will need to change these to 550, 300

Hmmm.... Def needs read the utec and try your best to guess what map would work for now. Try a diff map?? It's not reading the one you have on. Mess around with the maps and see what will keep the car alive.. If it won't barly rev then its def not getting fuel.. Try a map that provides more fuel?? If that makes any sense. If the idle keeps moving up and down on its own then your not gettin any air.. Does it smell like its running rich also?? Might not mean much but if you notice any of those things. Then you can try and figure out what kind of base map to try and change to according to what the map offers.. I don't know the utec system. But if there are a few 550cc maps try different ones. Might support more airflow.. Or try one for higher injectors.. Maybe you'll get lucky. If not. Tow it.. BEST AND SAFEST thing to do. Just suck it up and get it towed and it'll save any bit of being scared.

Just take it to go get a tune, that happened to me after I installed my Procharger w/ Utec, 550cc, Walbro Fuel Pump, basically same thing as you and more. And It wouldn't really start up, it boggs and was running to rich, struggles to stay on. It was so rich that we start it up and it turned off so many times it fouled my new plugs i installed. The tuner d/l the turbonetics map as my base map and the car didn't start, replaced my plugs again, car started but was running way to rich and struggling, tuned it, then its running. So you basically just need a tune, tow it to the place if you have too, that's what I did, no way I could of drove it with new injectors installed and no tune. I don't know if its the same situation, but it really does sound like it so keep us updated.

How bad was it struggling to run? My car is like struggling at maybe 500rpm if that. There is a lot of smoke though and it does smell like it is getting way too much gas.

I'm just worried that I popped my stock block. Cause I figure, why did it start right up originally and now it is having issues?

You need a tune? You never got a tune yet right? I got the same thing, alot of smoke, alot of gas smell, car was bogging and struggling to stay on, 6/10 tries the car will actually turn on when we start it, you need a tune, just tow your car to the tuner and you'll be fine in my opinion.

I would disconect the cog belt and the utec and drive it to your tuner. Atleast you will get there safley without any boost.
