Default Figured out reason for knock. PICS

alright so today i finally ripped up the bottom end. Let me tell you how suprised i was at what i found. The minor damage, i just need 1 new oil jet and an timing chain cover oil seal. The bad news, I got 6 bent rods. not 1, not 2, not even 5 but six.

anyways. here are pics.

This is the 3rd cylinder that i tested for compression and came up with 120. See how bent it is, this is the worst one.

Here are the rest of the rods. They are all bent but not that noticable in the pics

heres everything in peices

LASTLY, does anyone know if these hats have to be put in, in specific order or can they be put on any valve.

Thanx.

Stock rods fail. As bad as those look, you should have seen the bent rod I had in a spare hydrolocked engine I bought a while back. It must have been a 45 degree angle. And like happened to you, it had sheared an oil squirter off because of the bend.

And those cam buckets are specific to the valve they were on. If they came off and got mixed up, they will have to be measured for thickness and rematched.

The question is what were you doing to cause 6 rods to bend?

well my car is turboed. i mean i was expecting this to happen and i was saving up for a build but it just happened too soon. lol

alright, about the hats, do i measure diameter or measure the hat's wall's thickness. Diameter would make more sense. and what would be the difference in measurement in the hats and the hole in the head. thanx

you have to measure the height of the valve stem to match the bucket, best thing to do is get the Nissan manual

What kit do you have? I haven't seen your other posts so I apologize. It's just good to know what torque numbers caused rods to bend like this

Did you mix them up when taking them off? If so, it's going to be a fun process getting all of the valves adjusted correctly again.

regarding the "lifters", there is a number on the inside of then. that is a metric measurement. also, the service manual lists the size of the lifters. there are about 26 different ones available. the different is in the thickness of the distance between the top of the lifter and the part that suts on the valve tip.

you'll need a 0-1" micrometer to accuraltey measure them.

i didnt take anything off the heads. I took the cams out and then i turned to motor around to take a look at something and they just slid out.

I havnt looked at the manual in awhile, but each of those caps has a letter on them. If i remember correctly, there was a letter diagram that told you where to put the caps.

the page depends on the year Z manual you have.

read the section, basically you put them in and install the cams, then measure the clearance, then you take the cams out and measure the lifters then you add or subtract how far you are from the proper clearance and get the new lifter thickness needed for the proper clearance.

maybe you should have a shop do it

When you get the lifters figured out, don't forget that the cam brackets have to go back in the right places, too
