What's included on the build? Pistons and rods can be had for $1k and machining is less than $500, but you would also want new bearings at the least.

Depends on what kind of pistons and rods, but you can get Wiseco Pistons and Eagle Rods right at $1000 and they can hold 500whp all day.

Get some references of customers with that shop's motors and look any history of problems... Or better yet, just identify the shop to see if they have a history of problems here on the board. The true cost of a built motor is how much you've spent after it's been working trouble free for an extended period of time...

if you buy a 1800 dollar motor, you will have to pay me 4000 to fix it when it messes up....

there are no magical short cuts, do things right. if you dont believe me, ask the owners of the cars i have at the shop that didnt listen and now are being fixed.

this makes me laugh. i have a recent customer who paid a "mechanic" to build his motor. ok, here is what was wrong with it.

lots of bolts left off.
both intake cams on upside down
cam bolts hand tight
mains aimed toward the back of the motor
girdle aimed towards tha back of the motor
rod caps all mixed up and turned whatever way he wanted
i guess the piston wrist pin locks wouldnt go in the way he thought so he took some plyers and squished them until they fit
oil ring only had middle and top ring, oopppsss where do the rest of these go??
no balancing , no machine work, stock bore pistons with no ring filing
thrust washers?? who needs those!!
head studs tqed to probably around 45-50 ft pounds

i wonder why it wouldnt run??

dont let this guy build your motor!!
