hey guys just informed through research that the 18g from mitsubishi is the same 18g on the greddy twin turbo kit so it will work but im going to modify the the twin turbo setup they have and build my own for a tenth of the price with piping and all. excludes injectors, ecu, and oil pan. the greddy twin turbo kit with front mount intercooler goes for around 9 to 10 grand i can build it for around 1000 bucks with same turbos and everything. thanks for all the input but yea dont do the single its to small of a turbo. ill be adding a mitsubishi big 16g instead of a another 18g and should accomplish the same thing ill keep everyone updated on the progress

You're going a TD05-16G? That's a bloody small turbo for the VQ. I'd love to run two of them on my VQ given a way to adapt from the twin scroll to three cylinders. Might I suggest you map out your requirements and then use turbo maps to find something suitable.

I think its safe for me to post in this thread.
Goal-450-500whp TT
Budget-$8000, excluding accessories and tuning, but not supporting mods
DD-NO

I been doing a lot of reading lately and I did use the search function before posting this subject. So please don't bash on me or give me that Alberto's youtube vid treatment lol. I'm asking the community for help, cuz my cousin is being a jerk and not giving me any. He just keeps saying I'm too young for this. I'm 22 maybe I am, maybe I'm not. Beside replacing the connecting rod and clutch what else needs to be upgraded to suport 450-500whp? Excluding accessories, cuz I have a good idea on that already and I'm aware how much I'll spend on it. Is $8,000 enough?

How can you say "excluding accessories" and then limit it all to $8000?

Who is doing labor?

Fuel systems, injectors, engine management, down pipes, exhaust it all adds up past $8000 FAST

Nobody here would consult you to do rods and NOT do pistons which means machine shop work, new gaskets, etc.

You really do need my video treatment...you have high goals with VERY UNREALISTIC expectations and you want somebody here to justify your possible decisions. Wont happen.

Years ago I had a goal of 400whp

I did ALL THE LABOR myself on a TN kit, and after fuel system, better EMS, tuning, accessory parts like the correct exhaust, guages, etc it came to $8000.

Do you know what that got me?

38X whp on this particular dyno, a fun a$$ car, 11's down the 1320 and 3000 miles of fun before IT BLEW THE FAWK UP

Think about it

Gonna run a PowerLab kit with Haltech ems. Tryna keep it simple. 400 hp/tq or maybe less. Pretty much got it all down on what i need and am looking for hp/tq wise. Got the complete kit so comes with injectors, intercooler all the stuff needed. As stated haltech ems to keep everything as safe as possible. If I go with a conservative tune can I achieve my goal of a good fast/reliable car? Not too familiar with the tuning part, especially with Haltech. Im lost with this thing. Found a good tuner for it though so im pretty confident with them.

I'm sorry for not exlpaining myself clearly. I say excluding accessories, cuz I do have extra cash and I do have a rough idea how much I would spend on it. I was planning to take it to Z Car Garage here in Nor-Cal. I talk to a few of my friends who have some bad *** cars and they gave me a ball park estimate on labors. I just gave it a HIGH estimate on tuning and accessories on my side. Especially since it's ZCG. So I won't be surprised. Thats why I said excluding tuning and accessories. I know what I'm getting myself into on that part. Yes, I'm also aware of Fuel systems, injectors, engine management, down pipes, exhaust. Thanks for pointing out the pistons, because I was also questioning that. My friends told me that I might need to sleeve it, but my research says I don't need to. Correct?

Maybe I did worded my first post wrong. I'm sorry for the headach and confusion. Hopefully this post clear things up more. I was planning to purchase an IS350, but also debating if I should go TT on my Z. What other internals need to be replaced? This is truly my main concern and I have NO knowledge of it. Thats why I ask, so I'll know what I'm really going to get myself into. Don't want to be like a buddy of mine, who thought he was going to spend 15k on his SR20 build, but ended up spending 25k+. 10k+ is a big difference, but if I'm off by 5k or so I'll live.

SlideFox I know 8g's adds up fast! I put in about that much into my car so far. My Work Equips, AP BBK, Navi add up to that much already and thats not including the bolt ons and coilovers and I'm still not fast lol. I never plan to buy anything for it, but it got addicting. I remember a yr ago when I said I'm going to leave it stock.

Get back on topic. I would like to know more about the internals. Can you guys enlighten me please? My budget is well over $8,000, but there is a number that I don't want to exceed.

Starting at post # 285 another guys asks a Q. I then answered and asked him a question. Then you came in and appeared (to me) to answer the other guys questions just under a different SN.

If you had questions on your build why wouldnt you just say "this is what Im planning...." lol it looked to me like you were the same guy made me chuckle I've seen it before thats all.

Ok here is a suggestion. I do all of my own work myself so for me it was much cheaper to do than a average guy, I came over from the Honda scene with a lot of experience of building and was not afraid to try anything.

1) You need to buy a used but in good condition kit here on the forum from a reputable member. You can get yourself a nice condition TT kit for around
$4000-5000. complete

2)You don't have unrealistic power expectations but you are going to need upgrade: Pistons/Rods/Brearings/arp head, rod studs/revup oil pump /good clutch & flywheel/performance headgaskets & all new gaskets/fuel return system with injectors/ and a good manifold (ie.Cossworth) That's going to be around $4000-5000 if you get good used parts here (bearings new tho) with installation (machineshop or shop build your block)

3)Now that you have the most important part which is a safe build, you just have to find a good shop that will do your installation. That's around $1500-2000.

4)Go and have fun in your Z with about 450-520 whp/tq Priceless!

you can spend a little more in little electronics and tuning so have another $2000-2500 aside for that.

I think that is more realistic amount $

Good luck.

Great write-up. Looking for some info on the various turbo kits and can't locate it so please excuse me if this is covered somewhere and I missed it (yup, I'm a noob). Which kits require removal of the front aluminum crash bar to mount the FMIC? Which ones require mods to it? Do any leave it alone in place? Is there a thread with dyno charts of the various kits on stock and built blocks in one place, haven't had much success searching for dyno's.

If it matters, I'm currently stripping a spare engine I picked up down to the long block to get a built long block. I've got a Fast Intentions exhaust and would like to keep it if it's not too restrictive for a turbo application. I'm looking to make ~500 whp for DD, autoX and occasional track duty so I'm thinking twins with a haltech and a fuel return (I like mostly flat torque curves).
