Default PA Emissions Nightmare

Looking for a little guidance from my F/I brothers. I recently bought an 06 Z with a TN single turbo with MT and 16K miles. I have the constant CEL and cannot pass PA emissions. I got an exemption for a year after spending several hundred dollars. I have two immediate problems that I need advice on:

One of the pipes from the turbo is rubbing the air conditioning hose and keeps cutting it open. Is there a different (non-stock) hose that I need to change the location of this hose?

My mechanic found and repaired two cracks in the pipe that connects to the plenum. Is this a common issue with the TN kits?

I am just trying to get through this inspection and get the car back so I can have MRC evaluate and tune the car. Any help is appreciated - Thanks.

I would say just get that thing to MRC and have go over the entire car... Then tune. they may be able to use the custom AC lines from a plab kit but they know best..

Called MRC a few times - keep getting the machine. I wont be able to get there until the end of the month because of work anyway. Just want to drive the car a little while the weather is nice.

get a code reader - even better get Cipher or Osiris. That way you can clear the codes before going in to be tested - put 50 miles on and you're good to go (as long as the CEL doesn't pop up right away). Without the code(s), you're troubleshooting in the dark...

depending on the township if drive under 5000 miles per year you can get a waiver. But that probally still doesn't help you at this point.

I have tried clearing the codes, but the CEL comes back before the CPU cycles and resets. I get the common codes - O2 sensor codes and the random misfire codes.

I have the waiver, and although the car is not a daily driver, I did not want to be resticted by milage.

I am hoping MRC can solve my codes issues. Julian told me the car should not give codes if the kit is installed corectly and tuned correctly.

Anyone know about this AC hose issue?

Pretty sure the cats are stock - my local mechanic would have made a comment if they were the issue with the emissions. I have no idea on the intake manifold. I think there is an AAM plenum spacer. Slowly learning all the mods, but i've only had the car a few weeks and have not driven it much because it had no plates or inspection. I'll try to email tonight.

Not to be the bearer of bad news, but there is no way to run stock cats on the TN kit. The base kit is cat-less, or you can purchase a mid-pipe with a single cat through TN (or as part of a kit).

You should (or you mechanic) be able to peak under the car to see if the mid-pipe has a cat in it, it should be pretty obvious.

The A/C line is a common problem. I would probably try to get a new line from TN and bend it as far out of the way as possible. You should be able to bend the line enough to clear the pipe.

It sounds like whoever did the install did not take the time to do it 100% correctly. You should be able to get by with no codes, even without a cat. You may still get a random mis-fire code, but a good tune should help with the codes you are seeing. More than likely you are running the re-flashed ECU that comes with the kit. It might be a good idea to pick-up some sort of engine management (UTEC, Unichip, Haltech, etc.). That should help with the tune. If you are going to MRC, let them help you with this. They know what they are doing, and should be able to get you through this.

Also, if you are not sure what you have, post some pictures. If everything on the car seems to be running OK, I am sure the issue is with the tune and no cats.

thanks for the info jran.

i will see about the pics on monday when i drop the car off again. the street rods are in town for a meet this weekend and i want to have some light to light fun.

i am definately running the re-flash. Julian told me that an EMS will not elimate the codes by itself, but im headed that direction anyway. also, i am running a fujitsubo exhaust.

do i order the AC hose from turbonetics directly?

Violation of the Federal Clean Air Act, emission tampering by installing a TURBO usually cannot be legally resolved without comitting other crimes.

I am surprised that PA doesn't have a visual inspection and impoundment?

The state is a little opressive in PA, but I dont think its that bad

Yep - those are some of the codes. Looks like having the car titled in Florida will be my last resort. Hope it does not come to that. I ordered the turbonetics AC line with heat wrap today, be here on tues or weds - supposed to be in the 90's all weekend of course.

You should bring that line to a shop and have it extended a tad so you have some room to work it around the heat..
I had a crap load of wrap on mine.. It lasted a long time, but it finally gave in.

Those codes are known to have a pita. I don't think anyone has fixed those codes. Please keep us updated on your findings.

Finally got the car back today. Failed emissions, but got a one year or 5K a year exemption. Inspection plus Mobil1 oil change and repair of the cracked downpipe and replaced AC line that burst = $1280. Starting to feel that "you gotta pay to play" feeling.

Want to actually drive the car for a week or two and then hopefully off to MRC. Co-ordinating dropping your car off 3 hours away is a true pain in the ***.

I had the same problem as you did. Found out two of my spark plugs were bad some how. So I changed all the plugs, got it tune and got a new 02 sensor. Problem was fixed. I think my mechanic told me it was the upstream 02 sensor but not sure I could be wrong.

For some cars, you can reflash the ECU to ignore certain codes, you might want to contact Technosquare (not sure if they're still around though) or AAM to see if they can do something similar for you.
